The Vikings pulled even with the Lions for first in the NFC North with an easy 30-12 win over the Bears.
Here are five takeaways from one of two Monday night games on the Week 15 schedule.
Watch out for the Vikings in the NFC North
All season, the Lions have stood atop the NFC North. But the Vikings, winners of seven in a row, are pushing them to the finish line and might catch them by the start of the playoffs.
With Monday's win, Minnesota (12-2) and Detroit (12-2) are tied for first, and the teams meet in Week 18.
Injuries, particularly on defense, have depleted the Lions. Meanwhile, the Vikings have won seven in a row, one of the league's best defenses and a balanced offense led by wide receiver Justin Jefferson and running back Aaron Jones.
The Vikings have a tougher schedule for the next two weeks. They play on the road against the Seahawks (8-6) and host the Packers (10-4), while the Lions play at the Bears (4-9) and 49ers (6-8).
While the schedules favor the Lions, based on team health, we'd much rather be Minnesota.
Brian Flores should be a head coach next season
Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores again showed why he deserved to be a head coach in 2025 after another outstanding defensive effort by Minnesota.
The Vikings held the Bears to 1-of-12 on third downs and limited them to 284 yards, the seventh time Minnesota has held an opponent under 300 yards this season.
Flores, the former Dolphins head coach who is suing the league for discrimination, has repeatedly proven this season that he should have another head coaching opportunity. If the league passes him over this offseason, it will only prove his point.
It's Ben Johnson or bust for the Bears
If there's one team with a coaching opening that would be forgiven for not pursuing Flores, it's the Bears.
Chicago should be all-in on hiring Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who's helped orchestrate Detroit's explosive offenses for the past three seasons.
The Bears have appeared disjointed on offense all season, and Monday was no exception.
While Minnesota's defense did Chicago no favors, it struggled to do even the simple things right.
In the third quarter, for example, Bears running back D'Andre Swift's one-yard touchdown was erased because of an illegal substitution penalty, and the Bears settled for a field goal.
Chicago has a bright young talent at quarterback in 2024 No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams and must pair him with an offensive coach who can develop him into a franchise starter.
This offseason, the Bears need to hand Johnson a blank check.
J.J. McCarthy is in good shape for next season
The prevailing sentiment around the league is Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold, who's playing on a one-year contract, has earned himself a larger payday than Minnesota can offer him this offseason.
That would put Vikings 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury during the preseason, in line to start in 2025.
Arguably, no other young quarterback would be in a better situation. Head coach Kevin O'Connell has established himself as one of the league's best quarterback coaches. And with Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, McCarthy will have one of the league's top wide receiver duos.
The Vikings have set McCarthy up for success.
What's the point of flex scheduling?
What good is flex scheduling if the league doesn't use it? In Week 15, the league had not one but two dreadful Monday night matchups, with Falcons-Raiders rounding out the poor slate of games.
The NFL's flexible scheduling procedures allow the league to move Monday night games for better primetime showcases, which is why it's confusing the league didn't move one of these two duds.
CBS and FOX probably would have blocked Bills-Lions or Steelers-Eagles from being moved from their stations, but even Bucs-Chargers or Colts-Broncos would have been preferable to the clunkers we got instead.

There is no denying who the alpha is in the Green Bay Packers running back room. After burning rubber for 1,329 rushing yards to go with 15 rushing touchdowns on 301 carries in the 2024 NFL season, Jacobs is expected to carry most of the load again in the Packers’ ground attack in 2025. Besides being a reliable and effective weapon on offense for the Packers, Jacobs was also durable in his first season with the team, having appeared in all of Green Bay’s 17 games in the regular season and in the lone contest in the NFL playoffs. Look for the 27-year-old former Alabama Crimson Tide star running back to be there starting in the backfield along with quarterback Jordan Love in Week 1 of the 2025 NFL regular season against the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field. But as for his availability and usage in this coming Saturday’s preseason opener at home versus the New York Jets, it won’t be surprising if he gets zero snaps at all, considering that there’s really nothing important on the line. Jacobs is ready whenever he’s called upon by the Green Bay Packers Jacobs said on Thursday that Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has yet to convey a concrete plan for the Jets game. Nevertheless, he’ll be ready. Via Wes Hodkiewicz of the Packers’ official website: Jacobs is on board with whatever direction LaFleur and the coaches decide to go but said wouldn’t mind getting “a couple series” to reacclimate to tackling. “We’ll see how it’ll play out,” Jacobs said. “(LaFleur) hasn’t really told us what we’re gonna do. But I think I’ll get a couple hits, get a little feel of it and be cool.” The Packers will also play the Indianapolis Colts on the road in Week 2 of the preseason before meeting the Seattle Seahawks for their final assignment before the regular season starts.
20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer will return to the tennis court to play one more match at this year’s Shanghai Masters. Federer, who celebrated his 44th birthday on Friday, played his final match on the professional scene in September 2022 at the Laver Cup. It was an emotionally intoxicating doubles match in which Federer reunited with his great rival, Rafael Nadal. Roger Federer Announces Tennis Return Three years on from his retirement, Federer plans to grace the courts in Shanghai to play a celebrity doubles match. The tournament confirmed on X that the legendary Swiss will return to China at the start of October, when this year’s edition will be up and running. “Roger Federer is coming back to Shanghai. Join us on October 10th for the @rogerfederer and Friends Celebrity Doubles Match!” The tournament relayed the news. While the full schedule of who Federer will partner or play with is unknown for now, that match will take place two days before the singles final of the 2025 Shanghai Masters. In a short video announcing his return for one more doubles match, the two-time Shanghai champion said, “Hello, this is Roger. I’m really happy to be returning to the Qizhong Stadium in Shanghai for the Rolex Shanghai Masters. Shanghai has always been a special place for me, with great fans and unforgettable memories, and a real love for the game. I look forward to seeing you there on October 10th. Shanghai, let’s meet.” Why Shanghai? Shanghai is the penultimate Masters 1000 on the calendar and has previously been voted as the best ATP tournament of the year by players. The tournament represents some of the world’s best brands, including Rolex, which is its title sponsor. The Swiss watchmaker company is one of Federer’s most valuable sponsors. Federer has endorsed Rolex since 2001, and that partnership continues to grow stronger post-retirement. Federer has visited Shanghai in each of the last two years and has toured the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, which serves as the main court in the tournament. In 2023, he was presented with the Icon Athlete Award by the tournament in honor of his illustrious career in front of a packed stadium. And last year, Federer watched on from the stands as Jannik Sinner defeated one of his former rivals, Novak Djokovic, in the final.
Tottenham Hotspur have been looking to bring in a new creative midfielder in the ongoing summer transfer window, and the North Londoners have been subject to links with a move for Liverpool maestro Harvey Elliott. And as per the latest reports coming out of Fichajes, the Lilywhites are ready to match the Reds’ terms to bring the Fulham academy graduate to N17. The 22-year-old is said to be keen to play more regularly after he has had limited starts under Arne Slot at Anfield Stadium, and the chiefs at Hotspur Way see him as an ideal candidate who can be a perfect plug-and-play player to fill the void left by James Maddison, given his long-term knee injury, which is expected to keep him on the sidelines for the majority of the upcoming campaign. Elliott has that creative ability which is difficult to replicate Now with the sharp control that Elliott possesses, complemented by that understanding of passes and the ability to glide between the lines, he would give Thomas Frank’s side the kind of playmaking outlet his system thrives on. And while he has not found a lot of minutes for the Merseysiders given that he has to compete with the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones for minutes, he has quality, and at Tottenham, he’d have a clearer path to become a regular starter in both the Premier League and Champions League. Tottenham can now speed up possible transfer for Elliott The Merseysiders are willing to sell Elliott, but they have put forward some conditions, and among them is a buyback clause, which is likely to be on the table to safeguard against the 22-year-old reaching his full potential away from L4, or they are to charge a premium fee if the transfer should be concluded without any buyback clause. And now the North Londoners’ willingness to accept the Reds’ terms (either the former or the latter) could speed up negotiations, but Levy still needs to formalise their interest with an official bid. If this happens, the Elliott transfer will be a headline signing in the Premier League and at N17, showing a sense of intent from the Lilywhites.
Longtime New York Rangers analyst Larry Brooks has suggested that the team could name JT Miller, who was re-acquired this year, as their new captain and official successor to ex-Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba. The New York Rangers do not have a captain right now following the controversial trade of Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks in December. But according to Larry Brooks, they may have found one. Why Naming Miller Captain Could Signal a Culture Shift for the Rangers It followed a period of tension between Trouba and Rangers management led by GM Chris Drury, who reportedly threatened to waive him if he didn't accept a trade. Months later, the Rangers re-acquired JT Miller from the Vancouver Canucks; he was taken by the Rangers with the 15th pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Per longtime Rangers analyst Larry Brooks of The New York Post, the Rangers should name Miller their new captain and the successor to Trouba. The captain's sweater is not just another piece of laundry. It represents the organization's ethos. The Rangers acquired J.T. Miller to change the team culture. The 32-year-old is hard-edged and can be abrasive. That is the identity the Blueshirts should adopt. Miller was traded to the Rangers after a long public feud with Canucks teammate Elias Pettersson was confirmed by executive Jim Rutherford. JT Miller Expected to Be Named Captain of the New York Rangers, Less Than a Year After Trade From Vancouver The Canucks traded Miller to the Rangers, who took him in the 1st round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, for Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini, and a 1st round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. Miller returned to the place where he began his NHL career, and had 35 points (13G, 22A) in the 32 games he played after the trade. If Miller does become captain of the Rangers, he would be the 29th player in team history to wear the 'C' on his sweater.
