The New Orleans Saints continue their quarterback conundrum. Veteran QB Derek Carr remains on the roster, but they just drafted rookie Tyler Shough in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

There has been tons of mystery surrounding Carr this offseason. Will he play for New Orleans again? What is this injury he's dealing with and is it new? Has he been in communication with the Saints recently?

Those questions, and plenty more, got some clarification this week, from a notable report/update.

NFL insider gives more updates on Derek Carr

NFL reporter Jane Slater laid out some new, small tidbits regarding Derek Carr's injury and his future with the Saints on Tuesday evening. There's plenty to unpack from her recent social media post.

Few updates from the Insiders today on the #Saints and the Derek Carr situation according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

1) Carr HAS been to New Orleans twice in recent weeks to meet with the team doctor at the facility

2) He believes he injured his throwing shoulder in the same game he injured his left wrist. (Saints Giants Wk 14)

3) Why are we just figuring this stuff out now? He didn’t start meaningfully throwing until this spring as he ramped up for off season work and that’s when he noticed it. Prior to that I’m told he only threw a bit in a walkthrough with a fake football to injured players and Alvin Kamara. He didn’t get a chance to come back and really push it because Saints got eliminated and were out of contention and they sat players.

4) Why not just get surgery? Sounds like he would rather not as he has already had surgery before on that arm but still navigating that decision.

5) The Saints are trying to decide what’s best for the team and Derek is still actively trying to make the best decision for his shoulder.

6) A decision either way will be made here sooner rather than later per same source.

Slater also mentioned that there is plenty of misinformation swirling right now regarding Carr's future with the team and handling of his shoulder injury.

The future at QB for the Saints

It's really tough to know for sure where New Orleans goes from here. The vibe around the fan base when it comes to Carr is not an overly positive one.

In fact, many fans would probably tell you that they'd rather see Shough or Spencer Rattler start games this season simply to move on to a new chapter at the QB position. If those young options don't work, then Kellen Moore can look ahead to next year's draft for a more long-term answer.

Regardless, Slater did reveal some interesting tidbits, but New Orleans' fan base deserves some sort of resolution with this entire Carr situation sooner than later. We will see if that actually comes to fruition or not as the offseason rages on for the Saints.
