The 2025 season was never expected to be a breakout year for the Miami Dolphins. Few projected them as serious contenders, but even with tempered expectations, the team still fell short. As losses mounted and playoff hopes faded, one issue stood above the rest: quarterback play. After being officially eliminated from postseason contention, the Dolphins made a defining decision: Tua Tagovailoa was benched, and the organization shifted its focus to rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers for the remainder of the season.

Miami entered the year viewed as a middle-of-the-pack team, one that needed solid execution and reliable quarterback play to remain competitive. That level of play never consistently appeared. While the roster had its limitations, the most significant shortcomings came from the quarterback position.

Tagovailoa did not play poorly enough to completely collapse the offense, but he also did not play well enough to elevate it. His performance fell short of the standard expected from a team searching for a true franchise quarterback. Once Miami was eliminated from playoff contention, the organization pivoted from competing in the present to evaluating the future. The decision to bench Tagovailoa was less about short-term results and more about long-term direction. While Tagovailoa is a leader in the locker room, his level of play did not provide the clarity or confidence the Dolphins needed at the position. The move signaled that the organization no longer viewed the status quo as sufficient and was willing to explore alternatives rather than continue searching for answers that had not materialized.

With nothing left to gain in the standings, Miami turns to Quinn Ewers to close out the season. The rookie now receives meaningful opportunities to show what he can offer. These final three games focus on evaluation, processing speed, decision-making, arm talent, and composure under pressure. Ewers brings youth and uncertainty, but also potential. The Dolphins see value in giving him live reps, understanding that clarity at quarterback is essential as they prepare for the offseason and future roster decisions.

The benching of Tagovailoa continues to raise questions about his future in Miami. Once considered the long-term answer, he now finds himself in an uncertain position. Being sidelined after elimination, rather than finishing out the season, suggests the organization is at least considering a different path.

Whether that path includes a trade or a fresh start elsewhere remains unknown. What is clear is that Tagovailoa no longer fits cleanly into Miami’s vision of a franchise quarterback moving forward.
