Mr Ross, the Fans Deserve Better

Fans of the Miami Dolphins once again find themselves this week recovering from another loss, this time from the New England Patriots. While this loss was not nearly as bad as the shellacking they took from the Colts the previous week, this game was absolutely winnable.

The Miami offense showed glimmers of the machine they were in 2023, with Tua making some great throws to Tyreek Hill and Jalen Waddle.

The defense continued to look weak on the field, allowing the Patriots to score on every drive but two. They had a few sacks and did get some pressure on the Patriots’ quarterback, Drake Maye, but did not improve significantly over the Colts game.

After a week of being the brunt of jokes from the media, Dolphin fans are more fired up than ever, calling for the firing of Head Coach Mike McDaniel and General Manager Chris Grier. Fans created a GoFundMe page to raise money to fly a banner over Hard Rock Stadium.

They succeeded, and it flew over during pre-game. “Fire Mike McDaniel, Fire Chris Grier” was written on the banner.

A very extreme action for sure. This only goes to show how angry and frustrated this fan base is with the state of the Miami Dolphins.

This team has not won a playoff game in 25 years, the longest streak in the NFL. Since 2001, they’ve been in the playoffs five times, four of which were blowout losses.

Steven Ross bought half of the team in 2008, and in 2009, he became the sole owner. He is a highly successful real estate mogul and businessman. People don’t become billionaires by accident. They have to make hard decisions and do so with dispassion.

This raises the question of why Grier still has a job. He has been GM of the team for 9 years (previously working in scouting for Miami) and has made some good moves, but not enough for sure.

Overall, his tenure has been a roller coaster and has not led to a championship.

Mr. Ross is not afraid to spend money. The Dolphins have one of the best training facilities in the league. Money for new players is never an issue. He holds a rookie meeting every year to teach them how to invest their money and build a solid financial future. He is the only owner to do this.

After a disastrous 2024 season, he said the status quo is no longer good enough. Yet, little changed. Every fan and analyst has been wondering why Grier is still employed. No GM would have survived this long on any other team. In 9 years, there have been changes in coaching and the front office.  Grier is the only constant.

Yet, year after year, the Miami Dolphins come up short and continue to garner little respect around the league.

He may call for McDaniel to be fired; some have guessed it could happen as early as week 4. This is not likely to change anything this season. It seldom does for any team. It is a move to appease the fans and tell the world change is coming. It is rare to see both an HC and a GM fired before the end of a season. Grier likely hangs for now. But will his luck finally run out in 2026?

It would be great if Mr. Ross would treat this team like a business. Fire the employees who are not effective. Get an experienced Head Coach. One that will not be as hard-nosed as Brian Flores, but not as loose as the current coach. Find the weaknesses in the team and get a General Manager who will address them and then fix it. Most of the areas are painfully obvious, i.e., the offensive line.

This team has been a mess since 2000. Mr. Ross has not owned the team this entire time, but he has owned this mess since then.

Treat this team like one of your skyscrapers that needs an overhaul. Do it because you are responsible for the Miami Dolphins. Do it for pride. Do it because you are a businessman, and it is what you do in the business world. Do it because you are tired of banners being flown, jerseys being burned, and every sports channel disgusted with your operation.

Do it because your fans deserve it.
