Gotcha. Thanks to a proposal from the Philadelphia Eagles, NFL players are now allowed to wear the number 0 and for a brief moment it looked like Kenny Gainwell would be the first Eagle to sport the digit.
On Wednesday afternoon, Gainwell No. 0 jerseys became available for purchase through the team’s online store. No announcements had been made by the team, but that didn’t stop Eagles fans from running with the idea of Gainwell running with a new number

Then there was this:
No. 0 drama: According to the Eagles, Gainwell is sticking with No. 14. So, you know, don't buy his No. 0 jersey lol. https://t.co/anGSXSs2bD

That was fast. You have to wonder if Philadelphia’s marketing department knew what they were doing here. Eagles fans don’t need much prompting to buy new gear and they tend to buy a lot of it. According to the retailer Lids, Philadelphia sold the fourth-most merchandise among NFL franchises last season, trailing only San Francisco, Las Vegas and Dallas.
Had Philadelphia featured a more popular player, like Jalen Hurts, with a No. 0 jersey on their site, the fan base would have gone crazy. They would have bought out those jerseys, but things would’ve gotten ugly without an actual number swap.
Could Philadelphia be holding the number for Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez? He should be available to the Eagles at No. 10 and wore No. 0 after joining the Ducks. Or maybe the team knows of another prospect that would like the number. How does Bijan Robinson feel about his No. 5 jersey?
For now, fans will have to wait to see which player the team decides to give the old ‘goose egg.’
