Multiple Chicago Bears players are already facing a setback at the start of training camp, including a top defender

Things are starting to get busy again inside Halas Hall with the rookies and quarterbacks reporting back to facilities on Saturday for the start of training camp.

On July 22nd, the other veterans on the roster will join them in the building, but four players could possibly be missing when the team takes the practice field next week.

The Bears announced on Saturday that four players have been added to the non-football injury list: CB Jaylon Johnson, QB Case Keenum, RB Ian Wheeler, and WR Jahdae Walker. The team's first day of practice will be on Wednesday, and we'll see if any of the four can get activated before then.

Players placed on the NFI list are unable to practice due to conditions unrelated to football, or injuries that did not occur during practices.

Looking at the list, the biggest name that won't be able to take the field is easily Johnson, the team's top standout cornerback. Johnson also missed some time earlier in the offseason during OTAs although the reasoning for the absence was never specifically explained by head coach Ben Johnson.

The rest of the outside cornerback room who will get more opportunities with Johnson potentially missing time will be Tyrique Stevenson, rookie Zah Frazier, Nahshon Wright, and Terell Smith.

Keenum joining the list is interesting as well because the veteran quarterback hasn't had a previous setback reported prior to this update. Keenum missing time will give Tyson Bagent a leg up in the battle for the QB2 job behind Caleb Williams.

As for Wheeler, the second-year running back is coming off a torn ACL suffered during the final preseason game last August and was looking forward to getting back on the field during training camp. Like Johnson, Wheeler missed time earlier in the offseason as he continues to recover. On the Bears Weekly Podcast a few days ago, Wheeler shared some insight into his rehab process.

"The first couple weeks was really challenging because you can't do stuff coming out of surgery. Then, you kind of work your way through the pain. And then it gets to a point where you feel normal then you start trying to do not normal things and you can't do the same things you used to," Wheeler explained. "Now that we're at this point, it's just a matter of 'okay when are they going to fully clear me?' that's the question. But, I feel good now."

Last, but not least, Walker will also be out of action until he's cleared to participate. The UDFA rookie wide receiver showed some speed during rookie minicamp earlier in the offseason and getting back on the field will be key if he wants to continue standing out in hopes of landing a potential practice squad spot.

Ultimately, this news isn't something to be considered about right now. Once Wednesday comes we'll see who actually isn't on the field and then it comes down to how long it takes to get activated.
