Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel didn't mince words regarding the trade deadline rumors that have been swirling around some of the stars on his 1-5 football team this past week. On Friday, he was firm in suggesting all rumors were untrue. But some wondered if McDaniel was simply protecting Miami's positioning amid any possible conversations.
We have a pair of updates from NFL insiders one day ahead of the Sunday of Week 7 — and both appear to be saying the same thing. The door on the biggest name attached to rumors this past week appears to be slammed shut — despite overtures from some interested teams.
Common sense prevails.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport offers another update on the Dolphins' mentality with standout talent ahead of 2025 NFL trade deadline
"Several teams have called the Dolphins about star wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, and sources say those teams have been told Miami has no interest in trading him. Similar to Simmons for Tennessee, dealing Waddle would signal a look to the future rather than trying to win now. While things can change, it seems far more likely Miami would be willing to deal an edge rusher (perhaps Matt Judon, Bradley Chubb, or even Jaelan Phillips)."

This comes on the heels of Mike McDaniel unequivocally revoking all of this past week's trade rumors. Miami Herald heavyweight Barry Jackson also repeatedly reported this week that the Dolphins were not seeking to move Waddle — all of which should add up collectively to safely put the speculation regarding Waddle's long-term status with the team to bed.
I, for one, will be sleeping much better at night after the last 36 hours on the Waddle front. Rapoport, for what it is worth, did leave the door open for Miami to move an edge rusher.
Miami's outlook in trading Bradley Chubb is complicated in part because of the incentive money looming for the rest of this season. Jaelan Phillips will almost assuredly command the most interest — it has been reported frequently that teams have called on that front. The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported the same today regarding interest in Phillips (and Chubb).
Rapoport is the first to tease potential interest in Matthew Judon. If the Dolphins do indeed have any takers on that front, they should eagerly accept a deal. Judon has been a major disappointment as a late summer addition to the roster and is a part of a pass rusher log jam that is seeing too few snaps for 2024 first-round pick Chop Robinson.
The Dolphins have some time to sort their options out. All that matters at this stage is the latest affirmation that Waddle will be a Dolphin for the indefinite future. That's a win — and those have been hard to come by for Miami fans this season.
