The Cleveland Browns are back on the practice field in Berea as training camp ramps up across the NFL.
Much of the attention is on the four quarterbacks competing for their spot on the depth chart, but there is plenty of areas to focus on with this team that went 3-14 last season.
Former Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett is back in action after signing a new contract worth $40 million per season. Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Garrett highlighted a teammate he hopes to see bounce back in 2025.
Emerson had an impressive start to his NFL career, but the 2024 season was a step back for the former third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
“I think he knows that he didn’t have the year that he wanted to last year,” Garrett said of Emerson. “I know he had a great year before that, and he wants to continue to improve. He wants to prove that he is the guy in that room, and that should always be the mindset, no matter who’s in your room.
Whether it’s me, whether it’s Denzel, you’re out to show that you’re the very best — whether it’s on your team or across the league.”
Emerson and fellow cornerback Greg Newsome II are both entering contract years. The Browns may be faced with a decision to extend just one of them. Emerson plays exclusively on the outside, while Newsome brings added value with his versatility to play both inside and out. Emerson likely has the edge to remain part of the team’s future, especially given how well he fits opposite Denzel Ward.
After recording four interceptions in 2023, Emerson failed to register one last season and struggled in coverage at times. A strong rebound campaign in 2025 could solidify his place in the Browns’ long-term plans — and Garrett is rooting for exactly that from his teammate with Pro Bowl potential.
