Shortly after the Cleveland Browns fell to 2-7 on the season via a disappointing 27-20 loss at the lowly New York Jets (2-7) on Sunday, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that rookie Dillon Gabriel will remain the team's starting quarterback over fellow first-year pro Shedeur Sanders.
While speaking with reporters after the team's latest defeat, Browns star pass-rusher Myles Garrett seemed less-than-thrilled about receiving a question regarding Stefanski's call.
"Quarterback direction has nothing to do with me," Garrett said, per Anthony Pasciolla of Pro Football Network. "I’m worried about the defense and us giving up the points that we did and the first downs we did. Who we stick with at QB is up to Kevin."
Against the Jets, Gabriel completed 17-of-32 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns. While he can't be blamed for the fact that Cleveland surrendered scores on a kickoff return and a punt return, he did take six sacks in the losing effort. The Browns were held to just three second-half points.
According to Pro Football Reference, Gabriel began Monday ranked 31st in the league among qualified players with a 33.0 adjusted QBR and 30th with an 80.4 passer rating on the season. He's gone 1-4 as Cleveland's QB1, while Sanders has yet to make his regular-season debut.
Meanwhile, ESPN stats show that the Browns are 31st in the league with an average of 265.1 yards gained per game.
Wide receiver Jerry Jeudy led the Browns with six receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown in the loss to the Jets. Following the contest, Jeudy suggested he's happy that Gabriel will get at least one more start this fall.
"I think Dillon’s confidence is growing each game," Jeudy explained, per Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland/The Land on Demand. "All a quarterback needs is opportunity and consistency. So, him being out there and getting more reps builds his confidence. I see him growing each week. The more we work together, the more chemistry we have."
For better or for worse, Gabriel will spend the week preparing to start Cleveland's home game against the Baltimore Ravens (4-5) on Nov. 16. As of Monday morning, ESPN BET had the Browns as 8.5-point underdogs for that matchup.
