Namath Drops Rodgers Take As Jets' Season Ends
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Across 65 seasons, 119 players have attempted a pass for the New York Jets. None were greater than Joe Namath. Broadway Joe is the Jets' all time leader in passing yards, touchdowns, and quarterback wins.

Namath still follows the team closely despite having retired from football in 1977. One player that he's been outspoken about in his support is current Jets' quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers came to the Jets with expectations of taking them on a deep playoff run, and perhaps a Super Bowl. In reality, the Jets finished the 2024 season with a 5-12 record. It is just the 12th time the team has reached 12 losses in a season.

Rodgers' status as New York's quarterback moving forward is up in the air, as the 41 year old hasn't committed to playing another season in the NFL, and even if he did, there's no guarantee it'd be for the Jets. It isn't clear if New York even wants him back, either.

Namath, on the other hand, does want Rodgers back. He took to X on Sunday night, posting, "After watching @AaronRodgers12 play today, there’s no doubt he’s got at a least another year in him. So if he WANTS to, I’d love to see him stay with the Jets. He could definitely help the new GM and coach, as well as play ball. He’s still throwing with accuracy and authority."

Namath is referring to Rodgers' performance on Sunday, in which he became the first Jets quarterback since Ryan Fitzpatrick to throw for four touchdowns at home. It was a stellar performance, albeit one which came too little too late for the Jets.

Namath has taken to X multiple times since Rodgers came to the Jets in support of the quarterback. Prior to the Jets' Week 6 loss to Buffalo, Namath posted "Personally, I’d like to see Rodgers calling his own plays for the offense tonight. With a win, we’re tied for first place in the Eastern Division. So let’s go Jets!!!"

Namath was a big fan of the move bringing Rodgers to the Jets. So much so that he offered to let the Jets unretire his number, 12, to let Rodgers continue on the legacy of the number, both for the Jets and for Rodgers' career. Rodgers wore No. 12 for his entire 18-year tenure in Green Bay. Rodgers had declined the gesture, saying at the time "12 for the Jets is Joe Willie Namath,"
