Netflix announces documentary about the murder of Steve McNair

Steve McNair is arguably the most beloved player in Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans history, so when Netflix announced it was doing a documentary on his 2009 murder, many took notice.

The streaming service announced that “The Murder of Air McNair” would be dropping on Aug. 20 as part of its “Untold” series.

“Capturing the Titans’ 2000 Super Bowl run and unanswered questions surrounding McNair's 2009 murder,” the show’s description read, via the official Netflix X account.

McNair is one of the more decorated players in Titans/Oilers franchise history. A three-time Pro Bowler and co-MVP of the 2003 season along with Hall of Famer Peyton Manning, McNair ranks first all-time in team history in wins (76), second in passing yards (27,141) and game-winning drives (18) and third in touchdown passes (156) fourth-quarter comebacks (12).

The Titans retired McNair’s No. 9 jersey in 2019.

McNair was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds in his condo in downtown Nashville on July 4, 2009, at the age of 36. Police determined it was part of a murder-suicide by his 20-year-old girlfriend Sahel Kazemi after trace amounts of gunshot residue were discovered on her hands.

Police reports indicate McNair was shot twice in the head and twice in the chest while asleep on the couch and Kazemi shot herself in the head on the couch beside him. It was determined that Kazemi purchased the 9mm gun used in the slaying the night before.

McNair and Kazemi exchanged romantically suggestive texts on the day they were killed, in which they both claimed their love for the other.
