New England Patriots: A New Dynamic Cornerback Duo for 2024
Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

The New England Patriots should be heavily focused on fixing their offense in 2024, but cornerback is an underrated need at the moment. Could New England use one of their draft picks to add to the corner group?

They already have a lot of talent at the position, starting off with 2023 first-round pick Christian Gonzalez,  who looks like he could be a top-three corner in the future. Additionally, they have Jonathan Jones, the veteran leader who can play anywhere on the field and has the speed to keep up with some of the best slot receivers in the league.

But New England could use another boundary corner with good size to play opposite of Gonzalez. There is one player in the 2024 NFL Draft who could be a huge addition to an already-loaded defense.

Oregon corner Khyree Jackson is a player who could have a huge impact on the 2024 Patriots. He started his college career at Alabama and then transferred to Oregon where he took off. He was a First-Team All-Pac-12 selection, a very impressive feat in his first year in a new program. At six-foot-four inches, Jackson has the size to go up against just about any receiver in the NFL. The Patriots are known for producing great cornerbacks, so getting him in Foxborough could help him shine at the highest level.

Current Patriots corner, Christian Gonzalez is also a former Oregon Duck. Getting Jackson and Gonzalez in the same group could prove to be one of the best duos in the NFL for the foreseeable future, especially with Jackson’s athleticism and speed at his size. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds, which is absolutely flying with his six-foot-four-inch frame. Jackson and Gonzalez could be exactly what is needed to slow down some of the elite weapons in the AFC East.

The question remains, how high will the Patriots be willing to take a defensive player? After a 4-13 season with one of the worst offenses in the NFL, New England may use the first three rounds of the draft to fill some offensive holes.

Khyree Jackson is expected to go sometime in the second round, but if he falls to the top or even the middle of the third round, could the Patriots make a move to get more talent on their defense? It will be interesting to see how much New England wants to move around the draft board, and if they will be willing to have two former Oregon Ducks locking down the perimeters of their defense for years to come.

The Patriots could continue to build one of the most talented defenses in the NFL

With the addition of Khyree Jackson, we could see New England holding opposing offenses to record lows. Having two lock-down outside corners in Gonzalez and Jackson, paired with Marcus Jones and Jonathan Jones as the slot corners, receivers will find it very difficult to get any open field. The Patriots have always had great defenses, but in 2024, the Foxborough Faithful may see a top-three defense in the NFL.
