The New England Patriots drafted Drake Maye third overall in the 2024 NFL draft and was one of two first-round rookie quarterbacks to be healthy and not starting. However, things have apparently changed as the team is planning on giving Maye his first NFL start. This is going to make the Week 6 game against the Houston Texans a lot more intriguing so let’s take a closer look into the news and discuss why coach Jerod Mayo is making the switch under center.

Drake Maye, New QB1 for the New England Patriots

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the New England Patriots have decided to start rookie quarterback Drake Maye in Week 6 against the Houston Texans. This is massive as the Patriots have struggled, going just 1-4 this season. They are currently on a four-game losing streak, and the team ranks 31st in scoring (12.4) and last in passing yards (119.4).

Drake Maye is going to be a nice addition to the offense as he replaces veteran journeyman Jacoby Brissett, who struggled by going 79-of-135 (58.5%) for 696 yards with two touchdown passes and one interception this year. Maye was the third quarterback off the board in the 2024 NFL draft and has appeared in one game this season as he went 4-of-8 for 22 yards. This is going to be interesting and will give the New England Patriots a glimpse at their future quarterback for the next decade or more if everything goes according to plan.
