New England Patriots Top News of the Week: Injury updated positions new player to start
David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

The New England Patriots kicked off OTAs this past week, allowing media to attend their first day on Monday. But since then, there have been some big reports this week.

To make things easier for you guys, A to Z Sports will be releasing a story each week with all the top news for the Patriots, making it easy to find everything.

So let's get into the week of May 20.

Cole Strange expected to miss the start of 2024 season

The Patriots will be without their starting guard for the beginning of the 2024 season.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Cole Strange will be sidelined due to a "significant knee injury" he suffered late last season. He "may be out until the middle of the season."

Strange was drafted by the Patriots in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft and has started in every game he's played in New England.

However, now that he's out for a bit, the Patriots will need a new starting guard. And based on the first day of OTAs, it seems that there is one player that is already getting that opportunity.

The Patriots signed Nick Leverett in March after he spent four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And on Monday, he was lining up on the right side next to Mike Onwenu.

So this could position him to get that opportunity now that Strange will be out for a while.

Former Patriots WR DeVante Parker announces retirement

In 2022, the Patriots traded for wide receiver DeVante Parker, and he started making an impact despite the team's offensive struggles.

The team signed him to a contract extension prior to the 2023 season, but after a lackluster year, he was released and then picked up by the Eagles.

But after nine seasons, the receiver has decided to hang up his cleats, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Monday.

“I want to see my kids, spend quality time with them,” Parker told ESPN. “I want to be there for them whenever I can.”

As for what's next, he's not sure yet.

“I’m just going to take things slowly,” Parker said.

Parker finishes his NFL career with 369 catches for 5,266 yards and 27 receiving touchdowns.
