The last few years in Foxborough have felt a bit like wandering through a desert without a compass or a reliable quarterback. For the first time since 2019, the New England Patriots are officially the AFC East champions.
The coronation happened in two parts, and in true dramatic fashion, New England fans had to wait out the suspense. First, the Patriots absolutely dismantled the New York Jets in a 42-10 blowout. It was the kind of game where you could actually relax in the fourth quarter.
But the real party didn’t start until later that evening. Pats fans became temporary Philadelphia Eagles fans for a few hours, and they delivered. Watching the Bills lose 13-12 in a nail-biter was the perfect poetic justice to end Buffalo’s reign of terror.

We have to talk about how absurdly fast this turnaround has been. If you had told anyone last year, during the collapse of the Jerod Mayo experiment, that Mike Vrabel would walk into the building and deliver a division title in his first season, they would have laughed you out of the Dunkin’ Donuts.
Vrabel has brought toughness back to this team that was sorely missing. And let’s not overlook the engine of this offense: Drake Maye. The kid is special. He’s not just managing games; he’s winning them. Pairing him with a rejuvenated Stefon Diggs, who is closing in on 1,000 yards against the very team that let him go, has been a masterclass in roster construction. The rebuild wasn’t just “expedited,” it was strapped to a rocket.
Okay, pop the champagne, but don’t drink the whole bottle yet. There is still meaningful football left to play. Currently sitting at 13-3, the Patriots are guaranteed at least the No. 3 seed, but the ceiling is higher.
New England still has an outside shot at the AFC’s No. 1 seed and that coveted first-round bye. Here is the roadmap for Week 18:
If both those things happen, the road to the Super Bowl goes through Foxborough. If not, they are likely looking at the No. 2 or No. 3 seed. If the standings hold exactly as they are right now, they would be hosting the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round. The scripts write themselves.
