The NFL has done something kinda fun, and Bills fans should be excited. The league has updated their uniform policy, which allows teams to wear throwback or alternate uniforms up to four times per year.
One specific detail stands out — teams are allowed to mix and match alternate helmets with alternative jerseys. For Bills fans that have been clamoring for the return of the red helmet, this kicks the door open to make it a possibility.

The Bills wore red helmets between 1984 and 2010, but there were three iterations. The first, from 1984-86, featured a red helmet with a center stripe and a blue facemask, which was quickly replaced with the iconic white facemask from 1987-2001. From 2002-2010, the Bills kept the same red helmet/white facemask look, but they changed the center striping to feature blue more prominently.
The look from 1987-2001 was the look sported by the greatest teams in franchise history during their iconic run of four-straight Super Bowl appearances. It's a look donned by team legends like Jim Kelly, Bruce Smith, Thurman Thomas, and others. It holds a special place in the hearts of Bills Mafia.
During training camp in 2022, Josh Allen teased Bills fans with a red helmet, which was promptly removed.
We're still not okay.

Well played, @JoshAllenQB. #BillsMafia pic.twitter.com/AG1u0csRVm
The Bills have the opportunity, if they choose, to reintroduce the red helmet as an alternate helmet. Give me the red helmet with the white jersey and blue pants and let's cook.
It would be a fitting end to Highmark Stadium. The same stadium that saw those iconic teams of the early 1990s as well as the dawn of the Josh Allen era is entering it's final season before being replaced by a new stadium across the street. Give Bills fans what they want, front office. An ode to the Kelly era in the last year of the stadium that he played in would be a wonderfully symbolic moment.
