It was certainly not a usual journey for Taylor Elgersma, before and after the draft. Since the Canadian college sports rebranded to U-Sports in 2016, no quarterback had signed an NFL contract. Elgersma, a big-bodied, big-armed passer, won the Hec Crighton Trophy (the Canadian equivalent of the Heisman) in 2024 and could finally make that happen. He did it, by officially signing with the Green Bay Packers on Monday, but not before going through eventful weeks.
"There were a lot of emotions. This is a lot of hard work and a long journey to get to this," Elgersma said. "There was a lot running through my mind, a lot of excitement. I was very proud of myself for being able to sign the contract and get the opportunity. And also very thankful, I've been super blessed throughout my entire journey with people around me, and my faith has supported me through that. I was very thankful and feeling very blessed in that moment."

After a strong performance at the Senior Bowl, the Canadian quarterback from London, Ontario, put himself in position to get drafted. He wasn't, though, and didn't sign with any team immediately after the draft. He got two minicamp invites, though, with the Packers and Buffalo Bills. Meanwhile, he was a second-round pick in the CFL draft, by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He attended the Packers' minicamp and showed what he can become.
"My mindset was just on going there and compete, showcase who I am and who I can be for the organization. I wanted to showcase that they could believe in me and they could take a chance on me," the quarterback added. "I know that, playing in Canada, there are a lot of questions about whether I can play at that level, and this is my first opportunity to really show them that I can compete with those guys, in their building for three straight days, that I could digest playbooks, that I could handle the pace of the game. I think that was where my mindset was at. Once I got over the fact that I didn't get picked and didn't get a contract yet, it's right back to work, and I had a great opportunity in front of me. So I was just trying to make the most of it."
In Green Bay, Taylor Elgersma will initially compete for the QB3 job with Sean Clifford, a former fifth-round pick by the Packers. After five seasons at Wilfrid Laurier, the first task is to fully transition to the American football rules.
Under head coach Matt LaFleur, passing game coordinator Jason Vrable, and quarterbacks coach Sean Mannion, Elgersma believes he can develop into the best version of himself.
"To be signing in Green Bay, it's a perfect fit. From coaching staff to organization," he mentioned. "It's an unbelievable organization in Green Bay, community-owned. You see the pride in that fanbase when you pull into the city. Being able to play for coaches like that, that develop players and develop quarterbacks specifically, I couldn't be happier with where I am and I'm super excited to get going with them."
It's not easy to get where Taylor Elgersma did from where he did. But he's done yet, and there's more to come.
