New Ravens HC Jesse Minter addresses his playcalling role

After 18 seasons as the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, and finishing with a below .500 record (8-9) for the first time since 2021 (8-9), the Ravens decided to move on from Super Bowl XLVII winner John Harbaugh.

The Ravens opted to go younger by hiring former Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter to replace Harbaugh, who brings with him a defensive-minded approach. After leading the Chargers to the fifth-best defense in the NFL last season (285.2 yards), while the Ravens ranked 24th (354.5 yards), Minter plans on calling plays for his new defense.

“I do plan on calling the defense, great question. I think that's a strength of mine,” Minter said at his introductory press conference.” “I think that's one of the reasons I'm sitting here. But I also think it's my leadership qualities, and I really look forward I have a really good process. I feel to do what I need to do to be ready to call the game, but also have the ability to be the head coach and to impact the entire roster, the entire team, make sure that it's our offense, our defense, our special teams, and that there's no no divide there, and that I know that I'm in charge of all that. But really, it starts with the relationships with the people in the building, particularly the players, and I think they'll feel my competitiveness, they'll feel my mentality every day, and I think we'll work hand in hand together to build a great team.”

Minter’s defense with the Chargers was also better at getting after the opposing quarterback than the Ravens, having 45.0 sacks to the Ravens' 30.0.

Jesse Minter should help revamp the Ravens defense, but he’ll need a new offensive coordinator

Minter deciding to take charge of one side of the football is a departure from what the Ravens are used to, as Harbaugh played more of a CEO role, overseeing the entire team while letting his coordinators game-plan. With former offensive coordinator Todd Monken taking the Cleveland Browns head-coaching job, Minter will need to find a suitable replacement to work with his franchise quarterback, Lamar Jackson.

Minter has options available. Denver Broncos pass game coordinator David Webb and former Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury would offer the best options given their work with Bo Nix and Jayden Daniels. Webb helped the Broncos have the 10th-best offense this season (342.6 yards), while Kingsbury had the 22nd-best offense with the Commanders (318.8 yards).
