New Report Says Steelers Are Interested In Bringing Back LB Bud Dupree If He Is Deemed "Healthy"

Dupree was a key member of the defense from when he was drafted, but struggled to catch on early. However once TJ Watt was drafted, the two formed instant chemistry and something seemed to click. Their final two seasons together, Dupree posted 19.5 sacks, and would have likely had more if not for an unfortunate and devastating season ending ACL injury. 

Dupree is a force in both the run and pass game and would likely be an immediate fit back with the Steelers. He was drafted in the first round of the 2015 NFL Daft and was early on a stiff run defender. As mentioned before, his pass rush came along. There’s no doubt this defense would be better with him back in the mix.

Dupree’s stint with the Tennessee Titans was not the one the Titans likely bargained for. In two seasons, Dupree missed multiple games and tallied only 7 total sacks. At his cap hit and for his production, it made sense for the two to part ways.

Would Dupree Be A Starter For The Steelers?

The big question is would Dupree be a starter? The easy answer is no. He would likely be an immediate backup for both Watt and Alex Highsmith, the man who filled in Dupree's shoes since his departure. This would be something Dupree would have to accept, but at this point in his career may be comfortable with. He already has chemistry and rapport with the room and many of his other defensive teammates. A reunion could certainly make sense for both parties.

The biggest concern however, is Dupree's health. As mentioned, he missed multiple games in both of his seasons in Tennessee and appears to be a little less dynamic than he was in his final two seasons with the Steelers. These are things that may influence his and the team's decision at a possible reunion. 

The other thing that may hold the process up would be Dupree’s price tag. The market for edge rushers is a pricey one, and Dupree may feel he has a ton left in the tank. With the Steelers current cap situation, even with clearing out some and likely looking to clear more, Dupree would likely need to come at a bit of a discount. He could sign a prove it deal, or take some security in a lower price long-term deal. This would depend on where Dupree feels he is at in his career. 

The market for edge rushers is a competitive one and a needy one, so this is in no way, shape, or form a guarantee Dupree ends up back with the team. He will likely weigh out any and all options before making his decision. His chemistry and familiarity with Watt and the defense however, could speculatively be enough to potentially sway him to return to the black and gold.

One thing is certain, new GM Omar Khan is wasting no time revamping this team, and Dupree would certainly be a welcome addition. Only time will tell what happens, and like the rest of the NFL free agency, the news will come when it comes. Until then, we wait.
