New 'Starters' Emerge in Steelers Slot CB Battle

The Pittsburgh Steelers have two new names to watch as the "starters" at their slot cornerback position. 

Coming into training camp, Chandon Sullivan was the assumed starter for the Steelers after signing during the NFL Draft. With 31 games of starting experience, it was believed he would hold the upper hand at the beginning of camp, but two others have seemingly surpassed him on Day 1. 

Both Tre Norwood and Duke Dawson took first team reps during the opening day of camp. Dawson was the first slot cornerback on the field, followed by Norwood shortly after. They were the only two to take first team reps at the position. 

"For me, it's one of those things just put my head down and work. Control what I can control and put myself in the best position," Norwood told All Steelers. "We have a great room. Guys that are all hungry. Healthy competition, that's what I would describe our room as. 

"Being able to be in that slot. To get those reps. To get back comfortable playing there consistently and be able to put good things on film, I'm excited about it." 

Dawson, a former second-round pick, has been mentioned by general manager Omar Khan during the offseason as a promising candidate for the exposition. 

Norwood has been with the team for three years, contributing on defense and special teams as his roles grow. 

Head coach Mike Tomlin said the team will continue to work all of their options in the slot, which will include Sullivan and Elijah Riley. Patrick Peterson is also expected to move inside at some point as the week progresses. 

Peterson took reps at the slot with the second team on Day 1. 

"You know, we're just trying to get to know people and we're going to continue to roll," Tomlin said. "Eli (Elijah Riley) made a play at the nickel position, Duke's (Duke Dawson) working at the nickel position, Sully’s (Chandon Sullivan) working at the nickel position, at some point we're going to put Pat P (Patrick Peterson) at the nickel position."

The Steelers won't name a starter yet, and it should be expected that all of their options will workout with the first team at different points throughout camp. 

Move forward with a side of caution when talking about the nickel spot for the Steelers, but know that it's a real competition that includes four names. No starter will be announced anytime soon, but for now, it's Dawson and Norwood getting their shot to impress.

"Don’t pay too much attention to the depth at this juncture, just being honest," Tomlin said.
