New York Giants Bring Back Their Week 8 Returner That They Cut on Monday
Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

No, that’s not a typo, the New York Giants pulled some roster shenanigans this week with Gunner Olsweski . Before their Week 8 game, they signed him to serve as the team’s punt returner following Eric Gray’s calf injury. On Monday, they cut him, and on Friday, the Giants signed him to the active roster.

The flurry of transactions involving Olszewski was necessary to get him and backup QB Tommy DeVito on the roster. By cutting Gunner Olszewski, the Giants freed up a roster spot for DeVito to be the team’s second QB. After New York made more moves during the week, they officially brought him back to return punts in Week 9.

Olszewski is no stranger to bouncing around the NFL this year. After three seasons with the Patriots, including an All-Pro nod, he joined the Steelers in 2022. Pittsburgh waived him on October 20, 2023, three days before the New York Giants originally brought him.

How did Gunner Olszewski Fare in his New York Giants Debut?

Olszewski made a solid first impression with the New York Giants. Even though New York lost, he finished with 56 yards on six punt returns. His 15-yard return in the second quarter is Big Blue’s longest punt return of 2023.

This week, he and the Giants will take on the Las Vegas Raiders. New York is only 2-6, while the Raiders aren’t much better at 3-5. Vegas recently fired their head coach and general manager, so this represents a rare winnable game for the G Men. Let’s see if Olszewski can help the New York Giants fly home with a third win under their belt.
