New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka to call plays in preseason opener versus New England Patriots

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll handed play-calling duties over to offensive coordinator Mike Kafka for springtime workouts. Daboll told reporters last month that Kafka would continue to call plays through at least the early days of training camp.

The Giants open the preseason portion of the calendar with a game at the New England Patriots on Thursday evening. According to Robert Sanchez of SNY, Kafka confirmed after Monday's practice--which included some players fighting with each other--that he will call plays for Thursday's contest.

Daboll hasn't yet publicly announced if he or Kafka will call plays when the Giants begin the regular season at the Tennessee Titans on Sept. 11.

"I look at it as an opportunity," Kafka remarked on Monday. "An opportunity not only for myself, but for the players. Everyone out there is working hard to make the team and show what they can do and show that they can build themselves a role. So, I'm looking to go out and do my job to the best of my ability and put the guys in the best position to be successful and show what they can do."

Kafka previously served as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs but has never called plays in any NFL game. It remains unclear if he will handle the job when the Giants host the Cincinnati Bengals on Aug. 21.

"It's been great learning experiences between the situations we call in practice, and Dabs does a great job of mixing those type of things in throughout practice, whether it be in the red zone, two-minute, backed up, short yardage," Kafka added during his comments. "We've thrown so many situations at not only just the coaches and play-callers but also at the players. And I'm really proud of how they've responded to those things."
