New York Giants Part Ways With Defensive Stalwart

The Giants needed cap space. Bobby Okereke needed a new team. Everybody knew this was coming, and on Tuesday night, it became official.

New York informed the veteran linebacker that he’s being released, a move that frees up $9 million in salary cap space heading into what is shaping up to be a very busy offseason for a franchise with a lot of ground to make up. Okereke was set to count $14.46 million against the 2026 cap. Okereke was in the final year of the four-year, $40 million deal he signed back in 2023. Releasing him leaves a $5.4 million dead cap hit, but the Giants will take that trade-off without blinking.

When you’re sitting at roughly $1.7 million in available cap space with free agency opening March 9, you don’t have the luxury of being sentimental.

What Bobby Okereke Meant To the Giants

Okereke was a good Giant. He was a great Giant in 2023, his first season in New York. He made 149 tackles, posted career highs in tackles for loss (11), sacks (2.5), and quarterback hits (6). He was voted a team captain almost immediately after arriving. The guy came in, earned respect, and flew around the field making plays.

He was also the Giants’ Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee, which tells you everything you need to know about the kind of person he is off the field.

But football is a brutal business, and 2024 didn’t go the way anyone hoped. A back injury cut his season short at 12 games, and Okereke never quite looked like the same player. He rebounded in 2025, starting all 17 games and racking up 143 tackles, but only 2 tackles for loss.

The explosiveness that made him so valuable in year one had faded. And behind him, the Giants ranked 31st in run defense (145.3 yards per game) and dead last in yards allowed per carry (5.3).

Why This Move Makes Sense For the Giants Right Now

New Head Coach John Harbaugh doesn’t just want a middle linebacker. He needs one. And if you’ve watched Harbaugh operate over his 18 years in Baltimore, you already know he doesn’t mess around at the position. His linebackers have included Ray Lewis, C.J. Mosley, Patrick Queen, and Roquan Smith.

At the NFL Combine last week, Harbaugh made his priorities crystal clear. “The inside linebacker isn’t always considered a value position, but you can’t stop the run without an inside linebacker making tackles in the middle, right? You can’t do it,” he said.

The Giants hold the No. 5 overall pick in the upcoming draft, and Ohio State Linebacker Sonny Styles turned heads at the combine with a performance that solidified his status as one of the top prospects in this class. If the Giants decide to go that route, they’d be handing Harbaugh exactly the kind of foundational piece he loves to build a defense around.

What Happens Next For the Giants

The Okereke release is just the opening act. Expect more moves before free agency kicks off. Running Back Devon Singletary is reportedly next on the chopping block, which would add another $5.3 million in savings. Others on the potential cut list include Offensive Lineman James Hudson, Kicker Graham Gano, and Punter Jamie Gillan.

The Giants could also re-sign Inside Linebacker Micah McFadden, who missed most of 2025 with a foot injury and is heading into free agency. If McFadden returns healthy, he at least provides some familiarity with the system. But Harbaugh is clearly looking to upgrade across the board.

In free agency, names like Devin Lloyd, Leo Chenal, and Quay Walker are considered among the top available options at linebacker. Given what Harbaugh has said publicly, don’t be surprised if the Giants make a splash at the position.

The rebuild under Harbaugh is moving fast. Okereke’s release is proof that no one is safe, and no cap number is too uncomfortable to address. The Giants are clearing the deck, and they mean business.
