New York Giants quickly approaching endgame to quarterback saga as Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson are in the mix
Chris Pedota, NorthJersey.com / USA TODAY NETWORK

So who will be the next New York Giants quarterback? The franchise is quickly approaching to the answer.

At 4:00 p.m. ET Wednesday, the Jets are expected to designate Aaron Rodgers as a Post-June 1st release, making the four-time MVP quarterback able to sign elsewhere immediately.

The Giants are expected to be in the mix along with the Pittsburgh Steelers and a decision could come at any moment. Per insider Connor Hughes, "Aaron Rodgers is the quarterback the Giants want. They're waiting to find out if he wants them."

Reports have indicated the Steelers are the likeliest landing spot though the Giants appear to have a chance at securing Rodgers, specially after reports of an impasse between Pittsburgh and the quarterback surfaced.

It's a decision likely to come down to the numbers being offered by each franchise. And with John Mara expressing at the beginning of the offseason that he was running out of patience, the numbers coming from the Giants could be high.

Unfortunately for New York though, the Steelers have the better roster and a proven record of being able to compete in the NFL even with subpar quarterback play.

Recently, CBS' Josina Anderson pointed out the Jets could be persuaded to take on a bigger cap hit and trade Rodgers instead of releasing him, which many interpreted as the Giants having a chance to force their hand with a trade offer. However, the decision is truly up to Rodgers considering he has a no-trade clause anyways and would have to agree to his destination as much as the Jets.

Should Rodgers decide in the next few hours (or days, he does love drama after all) to head to the Steelers, the lone free agent option that could realistically start for the Giants in 2025 is Russell Wilson, who is expected to be in play for New York in such scenario.

With the No. 3 overall pick, the Giants could also target Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders in the 2025 NFL Draft though it's not a guarantee either will be on the board once they go on the clock.

Getting out of QB limbo is a tough task in the NFL. But it seems we're in the endgame now chances are it's a matter of hours for us to find out if the Giants will be able to through Rodgers.
