New York Giants Named Team That ‘Must’ Trade Up in NFL Draft

According to Ross, the New York Giants have reached their ceiling with quarterback Daniel Jones, and it’s time to turn the page.

“The Giants can’t go into another season thinking Daniel Jones, who is recovering from an ACL tear and has a 22-36-1 record as a starter, is good enough to be a legit franchise quarterback,” Ross writes for NFL.com. “And owner John Mara said recently he’d support general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll drafting a quarterback early in Round 1.

“They currently hold the No. 6 overall pick, but considering the glut of QB-needy teams, that spot will likely be too low to nab a top quarterback prospect.”

It is noteworthy that neither Schoen nor Daboll were in the building when the New York Giants chose Daniel Jones with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

During the NFL Annual Meeting, Giants owner John Mara said he would leave the decision about the franchise’s future at quarterback in the hands of his general manager and head coach.

“If they fall in love with a quarterback and believe that it’s worth pick No. 6 or moving up, I certainly would support that,” Mara told reporters at the NFL Annual Meeting in Orlando. “I let the general manager and the head coach build the roster.”

New York Giants Doing Extensive Work on NFL Draft Quarterbacks

In addition to crisscrossing the nation to scout the pro days of this year’s top quarterbacks, the Giants have also invited several of this year’s most heralded prospects for private workouts.

On Easter Sunday, the Giants put Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy through a private workout in Ann Arbor and also took Michael Penix out to dinner following his pro day at the University of Washington.

The Giants are in the catbird seat when it comes to potentially trading up with a team such as the Arizona Cardinals or New England Patriots, as neither would need to move out of the top-10 selections in this year’s draft and could net an additional first-round pick in 2025, as well.
