Heading into their Week 7 bye, the New York Jets sit at 3-3 with several impressive wins under their belt. After losing QB Aaron Rodgers just four offensive snaps into the season, narrowly escaping several locker-room implosions and sustaining injuries to multiple star players, it's an outcome that any fan of Gang Green will happily take.
Here are several midseason awards earned by Jets players and coaches after their strong start.
The Jets looked to ease Hall back into the lineup during the early part of the season, placing a snap count on their star running back as he continued to recover from a torn ACL sustained in Denver last year. Now in Week 7, the training wheels are completely off the 22-year-old.
Returning to the scene of his injury in Week 5, Hall torched the Broncos for 177 rushing yards, much of which came from a 72-yard touchdown run. He built on the strong performance a week later, amassing 93 total yards against the Eagles and scoring a game-winning rushing touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
Hall looks to be playing at 100% health, routinely displaying his quick burst and sharp cuts on long runs. The Jets will continue to rely heavily on the second-year back as they run a ground-and-pound offense.
Though Wilson's stats don't jump off the page, the perseverance and resistance he's shown certainly do.
Wilson entered this season as the clear No. 2 quarterback behind Rodgers. The plan was for the struggling signal-caller to develop under the wing of the four-time MVP, only to assume the starting role after Rodgers had played a "few good years" for the Jets. That plan went awry just minutes into the season, with Wilson being thrust onto the field after Rodgers tore his Achilles.
Without their future Hall of Fame quarterback, the Jets struggled mightily early on as offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett attempted to rebuild his offense around Wilson. Following a disheartening 15-10 loss to the New England Patriots, many among the Jets locker room, media and even Ring of Honor called for Wilson to be benched.
The Jets opted to stick with Wilson, and the quarterback has rewarded their decision by limiting mistakes and playing smart football. Facing off against Buffalo's Josh Allen, Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes and Philadelphia's Jalen Hurts, Wilson threw one interception compared to the others' combined eight.
Wilson was raked over the coals by an entire fan base but emerged unburnt — his mental fortitude and serviceable play are what make him the midseason MVP.
There are few head coaches in the NFL who could will their teams to .500 after the adversity that Saleh and his team have been dealt.
As if losing Rodgers to begin the season wasn't enough, the Jets additionally lost star offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker to a season-ending Achilles tear in Week 5. Then against the Eagles, New York was forced to play with only four active cornerbacks after starters Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed were both ruled out with concussions.
Despite a plethora of injuries to their top players, the Jets have upset the Bills and Eagles at home, defeated the Broncos on the road, and nearly beaten the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs. Saleh's defense has emerged as one of the best in the NFL, "embarrassing" several of the league's top quarterbacks.
Saleh has successfully put out several fires in his locker room, all the while remaining fully supportive of Wilson as his starting quarterback. His improbable balancing act is what's earned him COTM.
