Cornerback and special teamer Kris Boyd will miss the 2025 season after the New York Jets placed him on injured reserve Friday, two weeks after he was carted off with a shoulder injury during the team’s Green and White scrimmage.

Boyd, 28, signed a one-year contract with Gang Green this offseason worth up to $1.6 million, including $333K in guarantees. Set to enter his seventh NFL season, the Texas product has spent time with the Minnesota Vikings, Houston Texans, and Arizona Cardinals.

With the Texans last season, Boyd only played 48 defensive snaps. Throughout those 48 snaps, he posted eight total tackles while recovering a fumble.

Boyd is not known for his defensive play; he is known for special teams.

Last season, he played 406 total special teams snaps, committing seven penalties and five tackles, which equated to a 50.4 grade from Pro Football Focus.

The Jets were already without special-teams standout Irv Charles, who tore his ACL last season and remains on the physically unable to perform list.

With Boyd now sidelined for the year, the role of special-teams ace is up for grabs, creating an opportunity for several roster-bubble players to strengthen their case for a spot.

First-year special teams coordinator Chris Banjo will be tasked with finding solutions, as the absence of both Charles and Boyd leaves the Jets without a proven ace in the kicking game.

For roster-bubble players, that uncertainty presents a critical chance to carve out a role and catch the coaching staff’s attention before cutdown day.
