The Las Vegas Raiders face a stern test against the Washington Commanders on the road on Sunday, but the situation has changed dramatically.
On Monday, hours before the Raiders kicked off against the Los Angeles Chargers, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported that Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels suffered a sprained knee during their loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thursday.

An MRI revealed the injury on Monday and, while it is not expected to keep Daniels out long-term, his status against the Raiders is now in question.
Losing Daniels would be a massive blow for the Commanders, who have benefitted from their quarterback’s dynamic athleticism. The defending Offensive Rookie of the Year, Daniels lead an impressive turnaround for Washington in his rookie year, throwing for 3,568 yards and 25 touchdowns while rushing for 891 yards and six touchdowns.
It is another injury that the Commanders are having to deal with, as running back Austin Ekeler went down with a season-ending torn Achilles against the Packers.
Should Daniels be unable to go against the Raiders, veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota would get the start. The second overall pick in 2015, Mariota would create an interesting storyline with Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. Kelly recruited Mariota to the University of Oregon and coached him during his freshman year in 2012, prior to the quarterback’s Heisman Trophy-winning 2014 season.
The aftermath of Week Two has resulted in several high-profile quarterback injuries, and the Raiders find themselves in position to take advantage of one.
