No team has taken a more aggressive approach to the 2025 NFL offseason than the Seattle Seahawks. While those around the league will focus on the Geno Smith trade and Sam Darnold signing, the team's success or failure this season will likely come down to offensive line play.
This is why some have criticized Seattle's approach to free agency. After releasing veteran right tackle George Fant, the team has done little to address the offensive line.
The Seahawks signed versatile swing tackle Josh Jones to a one-year, $4.75 contract. However, the former third-round pick has only started 21 games over five NFL seasons and some would argue the team needs more help on the interior.
Pro Football Focus broke down its favorite and least favorite signings for each NFL team in free agency. Jones was PFF's least favorite addition for the Seahawks.
"Despite needing significant help on the interior, the Seahawks opted to bring in a swing tackle to bolster their already solid protection on the edge," wrote PFF's Mason Cameron. "While the contract isn’t cost-prohibitive, it underscores a missed opportunity in Seattle to bring in a proven producer on the interior. Seattle may move Jones inside, despite his last foray at guard generating a 50.8 PFF overall grade back in 2021."
Jones could potentially start for Seattle depending on how the 2025 NFL draft goes. The 27-year-old has played both guard and tackle but may be best as a versatile backup. The Seahawks have expressed confidence in former third-round pick Christian Haynes and believe he will continue to develop into a quality player.
That may be true, but if the Darnold experiment is going to work, the team must find a way to keep him upright this season.
