NFL Analyst Reveals Early Thoughts On Packers’ Jordan Love
Sarah Kloepping/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin / USA TODAY NETWORK

For the first time in a long time, the Green Bay Packers offense is going to be led by a new player. From 2008-2022 it was Aaron Rodgers at the helm for Green Bay, but he was traded to the New York Jets this offseason. Taking over his spot in the offense now is 2020 first-round pick, Jordan Love.

Jordan Love has some huge shoes to fill, just as Rodgers did in 2008 replacing Brett Favre. Confidence in him has grown within the organization as they have seen some development and strides made despite his opportunities being limited.

The Utah State product comes into 2023 with only one career start, coming against the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021 with Rodgers in the league’s health and safety protocols. He has appeared in only 10 games total, throwing 83 career regular-season passes.

That leads to some people questioning just how good the Packers will be this season. There isn’t much evidence to go on so Love remains a bit of a mystery. That, in part, is what lands him so far down on the quarterback power rankings of Cody Benjamin on CBS Sports.

Benjamin has Jordan Love ranked No. 24 heading into offseason programs. He did have some positive things to say about Love, but the unknown surrounding his lack of playing time plays a big part in him landing where he did.

“After three years watching and waiting behind Aaron Rodgers, it’s finally his time to take over in Green Bay. His arm looked especially lively in limited relief last year, but it remains to be seen how he handles a full-time gig as “the guy.””

It is hard to argue against what Benjamin said. The arm strength and progression as a quarterback in practice have been encouraging. But, until we see what he can do as a full-time starter, it is hard to rank him any higher.

The only players with less starting experience than Jordan Love are the rookies entering the league this season; every other player on the list has started at least one game in the NFL. All of the rookies other than No. 1 overall pick, Bryce Young of the Carolina Panthers who comes in at No. 21, are ranked behind Love.

Ryan Tannehill at No. 25 and Baker Mayfield at No. 30 are the only quarterbacks not on rookie contracts that are ranked behind Love as well. Just ahead of him at No. 22 and No. 23 are Derek Carr and Jimmy Garoppolo, both of whom changed teams this offseason.
