While Lombardo admires Staley’s guts to use all four downs, the plays they have are head-scratching.

Unfortunately, miscues on fourth down may have cost the Chargers a playoff spot last season.

Despite those changes, Staley has remained aggressive on fourth down.

He opted to go for it on fourth down during their Week 5 game against the Browns.

Facing fourth-and-two near midfield, Staley decided to run one more offensive play that didn’t convert.

That decision puzzled everyone watching.

Chargers Should Do Better In Picking Their Spots

They are doing well six games into the 2022 NFL season.

Therefore, decisions like those haven’t bitten them badly.

However, the time will come when those fourth-down calls will come back to haunt them.

Staley better come up with ingenious plays during those situations to improve their success.

The Chargers converted only one of their three attempts in fourth down.

But another aspect they can improve is yards per play.

The Chargers averaged 3.6 yards per play, way less than the Broncos’ 4.7.
