NFL Analyst Slams Bears for Not Replacing Matt Eberflus

There's no doubt Jason La Canfora has infuriated his share of Bears fans by reporting "multiple" GMs told him at the Senior Bowl they thought Justin Fields was going to be traded.

What the Sportsline personality said on Saturday probably was even more outrageous.

Talking on Adam Rank's "The Sick Podcast," La Canfora first explained the comments about Fields came from two GMs without specifically asking them about this. They volunteered the information.

Basically, this comment was only rehash of his tweet from the Senior Bowl where he said he heard this from "multiple" GMs.

"They (the two GMs) have no dog in this fight," La Canfora told Rank. 

"I don't think people should be, like, shocked if it were to happen," he said, adding, "I'm a Fields guy."

After the topic of Bears fans not particularly liking his work came up, La Canfora seemed to think their feelings are misdirected. He urged them to point their anger, instead, at their team's ownership.

"Don't let their corporate billionaire, socialist, cash crap limit your expectations for what it should still be like to be a Bears fan," he told Rank.

LaCanfora said it's the McCaskey family who should anger Bears fans.

"Don't be mad at me," LaCanfora said. "Be mad at the people who are stealing your money, who keep raising your ticket prices."

Actually, the Bears didn't raise ticket prices for 2023. It would have been embarrassing to do so after a 3-14 record.

Which brings up La Canfora's most outrageous comment.

While going on a diatribe about Bears ownership always being content to settle for mediocrity or bad, LaCanfora suggested they should have considered firing coach Matt Eberflus. He said they shoudl have tried to hire someone else who was available for 2023, someone who has just been hired to coach again.

"I don't know, (Matt) Nagy to Eberflus, like, that's odd to me," LaCanfora told Rank. "You know what I mean? Like, the Chicago Bears keep winging it and trying it, you know what I mean, with guys that don't have any expertise in that particular job. Like that's odd to me."

LaCanfora called their inability to even consider firing Eberflus in order to hire Sean Payton typical of the ownership's low expectations.

"Is that a franchise that's going all out with 'we're getting this new stadium so we're going to go out and try to win a bidding war for Sean Payton?' " LaCanfora said. "You know what I mean? 

"Like, that's not even—and I'm not saying it would have been right to bag him after one year—I'm also saying it might not have been wrong if you can get Sean bleeping Payton, who has some history.  Like, that's not even brought up."

Rank pointed out John Fox had been a veteran coach who had been successful and the Bears brought him in before they won 14 games in three years. LaCanfora didn't want to equate the two, as Payton had been successful for a very long time.

"He was the main thing in winning a lot of things, for a lot of things, for a long time, like winning the Lombardi Trophy," La Canfora said.

Ultimately, George McCaskey isn't undoing a rebuild in one year after he brought in Bill Polian to help him set it all in motion. 

The suggestion is unrealistic, much like the thought they are trading Justin Fields.

GMs don't usually tip off what they're planning to do at draft time during the Senior Bowl week, three months before the draft.  If this was the case with the Bears at the Senior Bowl, maybe it's Poles and not Eberflus who needs to be replaced.

So whatever LaCanfora's two GMs say they heard about Fields needs to be taken with a large container full of salt.
