NFL Analyst Urges Chargers To Make Massive Move Before Week 11
Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Chargers are defying all conventional wisdom and logic with how their 2023 season has gone to this point. Despite having one of the best offenses in the NFL and talent up and down their roster, they cannot execute when it matters most.

At 4-5 on the season, the Chargers are right in the thick of the AFC Playoff picture. But, they could be in an even better position had they been able to win some of their close games this season.

Four out of their five losses have been by three points or fewer. That has been a troubling trend since Justin Herbert took over as the starting quarterback. In his tenure with the team, their 13 losses by three points or fewer are the most in the NFL.

That is a major indictment against their defense. For how explosive the offense is, the defense has been inconsistent, which can be directly drawn back to head coach Brandon Staley. He is the one who calls the defensive plays for the team, which will continue in Week 11 against the Green Bay Packers.

At this point, Staley is digging his own grave. The defense has been the weakest unit of the team in 2023 and he is directly responsible for it. That is a big reason why Colin Cowherd believes it is time for the franchise to move on from him.

On a recent segment of his show, The Herd on FS1 and FOX Sports Radio, Cowherd shared that he believes it is time to fire Staley. Being 4-5 with Justin Herbert, compared to how other teams in the NFL are handling worse circumstances, is enough for Cowherd to go against his normal stance of sticking up for head coaches.

Staley’s seat had to be red hot after he watching his team suffer a historic meltdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars in their Super Wild Card Weekend matchup in last season’s playoffs. With things not improving during the 2023 regular season, it is time to make a move.

A defensive-minded head coach overseeing a deteriorating unit is more than enough to make a change. Winning in the NFL isn’t easy, but Staley isn’t doing anything to help put the Chargers in position to win games. There is too much talent on this roster to be 4-5 at this point and all the issues point directly at Staley.
