Hot or bold takes are a part of professional sports. For the New Orleans Saints, one take surrounding their future at quarterback flamed out a bit during the team's second half dominance against the New York Giants in Week 5.
The Saints ultimately won the game, 26-14, and choosing to pass on quarterback Jaxson Dart seemed much smarter after 40 minutes of play - rather than 20.
In the first half of the Saints-Giants matchup, Dart looked fairly comfortable. He threw two touchdowns and made a couple of plays on the ground. Those plays prompted a post from former NFL quarterback and now NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky.
He said that the "Saints are playing against the QB they should've drafted at 9" on Twitter/X. This statement was, unsurprisingly, mocked during the second half of play when Dart turned the ball over three times, including a fumble where he was not touched by a Saints defender. The Giants offense sputtered, and the Saints found ways to keep putting up points.

Additionally, the long-term premise of the take doesn't make much sense, either. The Saints selected offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. with the ninth pick, and he has performed well so far. The coaching staff has high hopes for him, and Banks also creates a strong, young duo of tackles alongside Taliese Fuaga for Kellen Moore's offense.
If the Saints did not see Dart as a QB worth taking in the top ten, they made the correct decision in not doing so. Against the Saints today, Dart flashed some exciting traits, but his rawness as a prospect became crystal clear once New Orleans made defensive adjustments at halftime.
Dart was often flustered out of the pocket and made massive mistakes on the ground and through the air. In the matchup, the Saints forced a total of five turnovers. Dart had three, while rookie running back Cam Skattebo fumbled - as did veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton. It was simply a sloppy performance overall by New York.
For Orlovsky, I understand where he was coming from with his post while Dart looked like a dynamic passer and runner. That being said, making that claim so early on, in a game where Spencer Rattler actually outplayed the rookie QB, turned out to be a bit short-sighted.
We will see how Dart fares in the long-term. As for the Saints, Rattler has improved his play so far this season, but the may be in the QB market next offseason with a clearer plan of a roster around that potential addition with this coaching staff.
