NFL analysts projects surprising Cowboys playmaker wins starting job
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

With one preseason game in the books for the Dallas Cowboys, they are a step closer to the start of the 2024 season. After a very disappointing end to 2023, there are a lot of question marks for the Cowboys going into this season.

It didn’t feel like a very good offseason for the Cowboys, as they didn’t do much to improve on paper. One of their areas of concern is at the wide receiver position. As of now, CeeDee Lamb is still holding out for a new contract, and the two sides don’t appear to be close.

Lamb is best player on offense for the Cowboys, and Dallas will be going nowhere this season if he sits out. While the franchise will work to get a new deal in place with Lamb, they do have some decisions to make about who will round out the receiving corps.

Recently, Bleacher Report spoke about the wide receiver position for the Cowboys heading into 2024 and projected Jalen Brooks to surprise everyone and land the No. 3 slot.

Here’s what they had to say about it:

“The unknown is who will round out the top three receiver spots. The Cowboys dumped Michael Gallup in the offseason, and there’s a competition brewing between Jalen Tolbert, Jalen Brooks and KaVontae Turpin. The battle between Tolbert and Brooks was tight early in camp.

Tolbert was listed as a starter on the first unofficial depth chart and may have the early edge based on draft status alone. He was a 2022 third-round selection while Brooks was picked in the seventh round last year. However, this is a competition that will be worth following throughout the remainder of the preseason.”

Will Jalen Brooks really beat out Jalen Tolbert for the Cowboys?

Considering the Cowboys might not have much of a running game with uncertainty in the backfield, Dak Prescott could be asked to throw the ball a lot this season. While Lamb and Brandin Cooks are proven in the NFL, the third wide receiver spot for Dallas seems very much up for grabs.

Brooks grabbing the spot is interesting, as many people have been high on Jalen Tolbert heading into the season. However, Brooks did make a big play in the preseason opener, and that will help his cause.

For Dallas, while the third receiver position is important to figure out, they must also get a new deal in place for Lamb, or this season will be over before it starts.

Jerry Jones is getting exactly what he wants with Micah Parsons drama

Do not let any of the noise and drama fool you. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is getting exactly what he wants with the Micah Parsons contract negotiation, even as it reached a boiling point on Friday with the star edge-rusher declaring a public trade demand. It's the perfect storm for Jones because all of this is doing the one thing that he loves more than anything in the world. It is keeping his team, his beloved Dallas Cowboys, as the top story in the NFL and the top headliner maker in the league. His team, his player and his story are the one thing that everybody is talking about. It's the top headline on every sports website. It's the top story on "SportsCenter" and ESPN. It's dominating the radio waves. It's put a spotlight on the Cowboys star and driven all of the NFL's discussions toward them. It doesn't matter if it's overly dramatic — or even bad press. It's still press. It's still focus on them. In Jones' world, the motto of "no press is bad press" is very much a way of life. He isn't worried about getting the best deal for the Cowboys or their salary-cap situation, and he might not even be concerned with putting the best possible team on the field. He is simply concerned with the Cowboys being the league's biggest newsmaker. There is a reason all of these big-time contract negotiations play out this way for the Cowboys. Whether it was Zack Martin, Ezekiel Elliott, Dez Bryant, Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb or Parsons, they have all played out the same way. The Cowboys dragged their feet, a holdout was either threatened or started, the bridges seemed to be burning between the player and team, the negotiations would dominate the news cycle and then eventually a new, more expensive deal would eventually emerge. That is almost certainly how this process is going to play out. Trade demands get made all the time in the NFL, and they do not guarantee a trade will get made. It is often a last-ditch negotiating tactic to speed things along. They usually work in that context. By the time the regular season rolls around, the Cowboys and Parsons will likely come to terms on a contract, and all of this will be forgotten. It will probably end up costing Jones and the organization more than it would have had they agreed to a deal sooner, but again, that wouldn't have given the Cowboys the headlines they want. It is almost as if Jones likes having to pay top dollar because then he can talk about how he negotiated and paid out the most expensive deal. It's about glitz and glamour as opposed to dollars and cents. All of this fits in with Jones' overall mindset and approach when it comes to running the Cowboys. He is the decision-maker. He is the football guy. He is the only owner who does weekly news conferences after every game as if he's the coach, and he is the only owner who does a weekly radio show discussing the X's and O's of the team. It's all about satisfying his own ego, and nothing satisfies his ego more than seeing his team and his name in the news. A drawn-out contract negotiation is the best way to do that when there are no games being played. In terms of on-field success, the Cowboys have mostly been an afterthought over the past 30 years. No Super Bowls, no NFC Championship Game appearances (the longest current drought in the NFC) and mostly mediocre finishes. Any other franchise with that sort of track record would be an afterthought in the NFL. But not the Cowboys. Not Jerry Jones. It is all by design. It's the only thing they want and care about.

Steelers Spark Crazy Trade Rumors After Cowboys' Micah Parsons' Prior Comments Resurface

Khan has openly said he will never pass up the chance to explore opportunities that could improve the team. On Friday, news broke that Parsons requested a trade out of Dallas. While the possibility of landing Parsons remains a long shot, this request provides Khan with a rare window to investigate whether there’s a way to bring one of the league’s most dominant pass rushers to Pittsburgh. Earlier in February 2025, Parsons spoke with former Steelers cornerback turned analyst Bryant McFadden about the Steelers. During the conversation, McFadden joked that the Steelers logo would look good on Parsons. Parsons responded playfully, saying he would love to play for Mike Tomlin, adding fuel to the speculation that a move to Pittsburgh might not be completely out of the question. "Nah, I rock with the Steelers," Parsons said. "I said if I ever return home it was going to be Pittsburgh. I mess with Mike Tomlin the long way." It’s no secret that Tomlin is one of the most popular head coaches in the NFL. Many players have expressed a strong desire to play for him, and that reputation has sometimes helped the Steelers attract top talent. A prime example of this is when the Steelers convinced four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers to join the team, a move that energized the fanbase and boosted expectations. The idea of Parsons lining up alongside TJ Watt and the rest of Pittsburgh’s elite defense is both thrilling and intimidating. While it remains a very far-fetched possibility, Parsons’ recent comments about wanting to play for the Steelers have sparked excitement among fans. These remarks, made in 2025, add fuel to the speculation that a trade could be in the cards, even if the odds are slim. Parsons, who grew up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, shared a message on social media Friday explaining what really led to his trade request. If Parsons has any influence over his next destination, and if Khan can work his magic, the Steelers might just have a slim but real chance to pull off a trade. Landing Parsons would instantly make Pittsburgh’s defense one of the most fearsome in NFL history, though it remains an ambitious long shot. Steelers Chances Of Trading For Micah Parsons Are Low While the thought of Parsons playing in the black and gold for the 2025 season is certainly exciting, the logistics would be very complex, though not impossible. Parsons is clearly unhappy with the Cowboys, and Jerry Jones has not helped their chances of keeping him satisfied. He officially wants out, and now is the time for Khan to see if there’s any logical way to pull off a crazy trade.

Pirates take yet another PR hit for mishandling David Bednar trade

Pirates take yet another PR hit for mishandling David Bednar trade

The Pittsburgh Pirates brutally fumbled the 2025 trade deadline, even by their miserable standards. But it wasn't just the fact that their moves made little sense and did nothing to improve the short-term and long-term outlook of the franchise. It is also now about the way they handled the trade involving closer David Bednar going to the New York Yankees. Bednar revealed on Friday night during an interview with YES Network that he only found out about the trade on social media, and it took a phone call to his agent and quite a bit of time before he got the actual confirmation that he was going to the Yankees. On one hand, this is not entirely unheard of. Sometimes trade news breaks early due to a leak within somebody's front office, and on trade deadline day, teams can have their hands full trying to make deals before they run out of time. Sometimes things slip through the cracks. But it still seems like poor form for the Pirates not to have their ducks in a row when it comes to informing their player about a trade. Especially, in this case, a player like Bednar. Not only has he been one of the few bright spots on the Pirates over the past five years, but he is also from the Pittsburgh area and fully embraced being a Pirate. He loved it. He loved playing there. He wanted to play there and seemed open to staying. That is not an easy thing to find, given where the franchise has been and how consistently bad it has been over the past four decades. Outside of a tough 2024 season and some early struggles this season, he was also a wildly popular player among the fans. The Pirates also knew that to the point where owner Bob Nutting reportedly blocked a potential Bednar trade a couple of years ago. A player with that sort of standing within the organization should not have to find out about being traded through social media. They should certainly not have to have their agent track down official sources to confirm it. For most teams, and if this sort of situation were taking place in a vacuum, it may not be that big of a deal. It would probably be just a minor slip-up and footnote to the trade deadline. But the Pirates are not a normal team, and this situation is not happening in a vacuum. The Pirates have spent the entire season creating self-inflicted PR nightmares all over the place, from the Roberto Clemente tribute that was taken door for a hard seltzer ad, to the handling of Bucco Bricks outside of PNC Park, to "Sell the team" chants consistently breaking out, to the simple fact the organization has been an absolute mess on the field and one of the worst teams in baseball. Now they can add allowing a popular, fan favorite to find out about his trade through social media to the list. Even worse for Pirates fans, they seemed to get the worst value for their All-Star closer than other teams (specifically the A's and Minnesota Twins) received for their All-Star closers. This is a franchise that just simply can not do anything right.

Aliyah Boston Has One Word After Big Indiana Fever News

Caitlin Clark’s extended injury absence has prompted the Indiana Fever’s front office to make a move during this crucial juncture in the season. This came in the form of signing 6-foot-2 forward Chloe Bibby on a seven-day contract on July 25. That short-term deal has now come to an end, which has forced Indiana to make a decision on Bibby’s status with the team. Indiana Fever Sign Chloe Bibby The team announced on Thursday that Bibby will now be with the squad for the remainder of the season. This is after the 27-year-old put pen to paper on a rest-of-season contract. The Fever rewarded Bibby with a new deal after two strong performances. She helped Indiana secure back-to-back wins on Sunday against the Chicago Sky and on Wednesday against the Phoenix Mercury. In her first two appearances for the Fever, the Australian averaged 9.0 points and 2.0 triples in just 12.0 minutes off the bench. Aliyah Boston Reacts to the News Fever fans have been clamoring for a long-term contract for Bibby, and they finally got their wish on Friday. This was met with excitement by the Indiana faithful, which was also the case for Fever star Aliyah Boston. The three-time All-Star took to Instagram to share her reaction to the Bibby news. Boston used just one word to express her excitement. “ wohoo,” she wrote. Bibby has been with the team for merely a week, but she’s already made quite an impact on her new teammates. Boston’s enthusiasm over Bibby’s new deal is a testament to the same. As for her basketball, Boston has needed to step up amid Clark’s absence. While the recent Bibby boost has been great for Indiana, Boston has taken center stage as Clark continues to nurse her re-aggravated groin. In the five games Clark has sat out, Boston has put up averages of 14.2 points, 9.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.4 steals in 31.8 minutes per contest. Boston will need to keep her foot on the gas on Friday against Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings if she hopes to help lead Indiana to its fourth straight win.
