The Houston Texans have their eye on a third straight AFC South championship. Their moves in free agency and the 2025 NFL Draft had this in mind.
One of their moves was to sign veteran Ronald Darby to add needed depth in their CB room, but his unexpected retirement threw a wrinkle into their plans. An NFL analyst pitched a possible replacement that the Texans should pursue in a recent article.
My annual ESPN piece on one more move for each team in July. A couple of trade suggestions, some contract extensions that should be done, and a few homes for remaining free agents are all in here.https://t.co/QuDSkvFSbi

"The Texans lost some of their depth at the cornerback position when Ronald Darby retired in early June, so let's give them another veteran to play behind Derek Stingley Jr. and Kamari Lassiter.
Douglas, 29, didn't have a great season for Buffalo in 2024, but two seasons ago he ranked third in the NFL in my coverage DVOA metric. He can play both inside and outside, which gives coach DeMeco Ryans some more flexibility."

The Texans' top CB will, of course, be Derek Stingley Jr., and Kamari Lassiter is coming off a strong rookie season. You could make the argument he is better suited to play in the slot long term, though. So signing a veteran to fill the spot meant for Darby would be wise. This ESPN article mentioned Rasul Douglas, who is one solid option, but the Texans could also consider players like Stephon Gilmore, Kendall Fuller, James Bradberry, among other intriguing options. The team could want to wait until training camp to see how others in their room look, but if they are going to make one more big move before the season, I think it's safe to assume it will come at CB.
