NFL Announces Punishment For Panthers, 49ers Incident

There were fireworks between Carolina Panthers safety Tre'von Moehrig and San Francisco 49ers wide receivers Jauan Jennings on "Monday Night Football."

Towards the end of the Panthers-49ers game, Moehrig punched Jennings in the groin area. He responded by giving Moehrig an open-handed cross to his face mask. Teammates on both sides stepped in to break up this brawl.

"I was just responding to some childish behavior," Jennings told reporters. "That was just out of nowhere. I think it's probably just like I was saying, just the history of me playing ball. I play hard. I'm physically stronger than a lot of DBs out there and a lot of things happen in between the whistles. With me at least."

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan added, "I was real proud of Jauan for not losing his mind out there and getting to the sideline."

The NFL wasted no time disciplining Moehrig for his actions.

On Tuesday afternoon, the NFL handed Moehrig a one-game suspension for striking Jennings below the belt. It doesn't sound like the 49ers wideout will be disciplined for retaliating.

Tre'von Moehrig reacts.

ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that Moehrig will appeal the NFL's suspension.

"Tre’von Moehrig’s appeal will be heard and decided upon by either Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster or Jordy Nelson, the hearing officers jointly appointed and compensated by the NFL and NFLPA to decide appeals of on-field player discipline," Schefter said.

If Moehrig doesn't win his appeal, he'll be suspended for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams.
