NFL Called Out By Flag Football 'Better Than Mahomes' QB About Olympics Roster

When the NFL officially made it possible for players to compete in the first-ever flag football competition at the Olympics, speculation swirled about who should fill out the Team USA roster.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes would be an obvious pick to play quarterback for multiple reasons, and he even expressed his interest in participating in the 2028 LA Games a few years ago.

The International Olympic Committee's adoption of flag football as an Olympic sport has been in the works since 2023. They closely surveyed other prominent flag football entities to gauge the sport's intrigue before considering adding it to the LA28 slate.

So although it isn't very publicized, the United States has had flag football.

The national team has won two IFAF Flag Football World Championships with 35-year-old quarterback Darrell Doucette III. After the NFL's announcement about the Olympics, Doucette has barked back saying he doesn't think NFL players should compete.

"This is a sport we've played for a long time, and we feel like we are the best at it and we don't need other guys," Doucette said to the Washington Post.

He added that he would be "open to competition on the roster", but that predominant flag football players should "deserve their opportunity" along with NFL players.

Doucette previously compared flag football to the NFL in a stunning statement to TMZ Sports that made headlines last summer with a shot at Mahomes.

"I’m not hiding from the competition, none of my teammates nor anybody else in the flag football world are hiding from the competition," Doucette said,

"But at the end of the day, I feel like I’m better than Patrick Mahomes because of my IQ of the game. I know he’s right now the best in the league, I know he’s more accurate, I know he has all these intangibles, but when it comes to flag football, I feel like I know more than him."

Flag football players may have more experience with the sport itself, but NFL players will bring a unique brand of size and athleticism that is unmatched.

However the Team USA roster is filled out it is sure to feature major controversy, especially at quarterback.

Per the NFL's new rule on the matter, players are able to try out for Team USA and only one player per team (for each country origin) can make a roster.
