For the second straight year, a typical NFL offseason event won't take place.
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero tweeted Tuesday that the league won't hold a supplemental draft this summer. There was no such draft held last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and Pelissero explained the collective bargaining agreement does not require a yearly supplemental draft.
As Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk noted, players ineligible for the standard NFL Draft who experience changes to their college eligibility or otherwise become able to go pro can enter the summer supplemental draft. A team forfeits a selection from the subsequent NFL Draft if it acquires a player via the current year's supplemental draft.
For example, the Arizona Cardinals spent a 2020 fifth-round pick to land safety Jalen Thompson in 2019. Quarterback Bernie Kosar and Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter are two of the more famous supplemental draft picks in league history, while the Cleveland Browns took a flier on troubled receiver Josh Gordon via a second-round pick in 2012.
