NFL Columnist Lists This Re-Signing As Riskiest Move By The Chargers This Off Season
USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Chargers have some new faces they've signed this offseason. There are a handful of new faces, and some returning players are ready to redeem themselves for the upcoming 2023 season.

2022 ended on a sour note, and many players want to turn that bad into good, including right tackle Trey Pipkins III. Pipkins entered the 2023 offseason as a free agent and signed with the Bolts for three years worth $21.75 million at the start of free agency. The offensive line is crucial to team success, and they know how vital Pipkins is to the team.

However, many others may not feel the same way, like Clutch Points writer Enzo Flojo, who believes LA's riskiest free agency move was re-signing their 26-year-old tackle.

The riskiest free agent signing the Chargers made was re-signing RT Trey Pipkins to a three-year contract extension. Pipkins has been inconsistent throughout his career, and he has only started 24 games in four seasons. It is worth noting, however, that he did start all 14 games last season. That's a first for him. He is also coming off a season in which he had six penalties. The Chargers are hoping that Pipkins can take a step forward in his development, but there is a risk that he could regress and become a liability on the offensive line.

In 2022, Pipkins played in 898 offensive snaps, was called for six penalties, and only allowed two sacks. Those types of numbers deemed him worthy of his contract, but we'll see how it plays out.

The 26-year-old was taken by LA in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He's played in 52 games and started in 24 of them. He's lasted at RT1 on the depth chart, and if he remains healthy and plays to his capabilities, it will be his spot to lose.

The offensive line is crucial to the football team, and LA will show they have the best in the league.
