NFL could play games on Saturday if college football season is canceled

The NFL owns Sundays during football season but they may end up claiming ownership over the entire weekend, as the league is reportedly considering playing games on Saturday if the college football season is canceled.

According to the New York Post, the league would allow some flexibility to move games to Saturday, while still keeping the majority of the games on Sunday. Primetime games on Monday and Thursday are not expected to be moved. Currently, the NFL only has games on Saturday after the college football season is over but that would be moved up if this plan is enacted.

The reason for the move is pretty obvious: it would allow the NFL to get even more viewers, which would mean more revenue. Plus, the NFL has always wanted to dominate as much of the schedule as possible, which is why they have ventured into Monday and Thursday nights along with Sunday. If Saturday is available, it makes sense that the NFL will want it.

Of course, this is all reliant on the idea that college football would be canceled. But why would the NFL survive while college football didn't? Well, the big reason is that college football players are students and if schools aren't open, then school sports won't be happening either. Additionally, crowd attendance is a bigger part of the finances of college football than the NFL, so it would be hard to justify playing games unless crowds are involved.

It's no secret that the NFL is the powerhouse when it comes to viewership, with nearly one-third of Americans watching the Super Bowl each year. And considering the rise in ratings for last week's draft, it's hard to imagine the league wouldn't see a major bump in viewers for the upcoming season, presuming a season happens at all.
