NFL declines comment on Aaron Rodgers MVP voting controversy

Hub Arkush generated controversy and quite a bit of anger Tuesday when he told Chicago sports radio station 670 The Score he would not be selecting Green Bay Packers quarterback and reigning NFL Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers as this season's MVP because he views Rodgers as "the biggest jerk in the league" rather than for "strictly on the field" reasons.

Some fans, analysts and writers called for The Associated Press and/or the NFL to strip Arkush of his voting privileges. Per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the league wasn't ready to address the matter as of Wednesday morning.

"This is one of the annual Associated Press awards," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy wrote in an emailed statement. "It is announced during the NFL Honors show but the league does not select the voters or oversee any element of the process so it’s not appropriate for us to comment."

In a different piece, Florio noted Arkush admitted during a Wednesday appearance on 670 The Score he "made a big mistake" disclosing his intentions to the public.

"It’s on me," Arkush explained about that decision. "I screwed up. . . . All you can do is own it, and I own it."

Previously, Arkush told the station:

"But one of the ways we get to keep being voters is we’re not allowed to say who we are voting for until after the award has been announced. I’m probably pushing the envelope by saying who I’m not voting for. But we’re not really supposed to reveal our votes."

It's unclear if Arkush will still hold his AP vote for MVP beyond the current season.
