NFL Draft Analyst Bucky Brooks Suggests This Veteran Quarterback for Giants

Just as fashion has a way of making a comeback in society (and not always successfully), now comes a recycled proposed answer to the New York Giants quarterback conundrum.

NFL analyst Bucky Brooks, during an appearance on the NFL Network program NFL Total Access, suggested that quarterback Russell Wilson, currently awaiting word on his fate in Denver, would get “a chance for a Super Bowl title" if he were to join the Pittsburgh Steelers or New York Giants.

Seriously.

Brooks correctly noted, "The New York Giants might need a quarterback that stabilizes the situation.” This is something general manager Joe Schoen himself has acknowledged on several occasions, most recently at the combine, where he also said that he hasn't ruled out drafting a quarterback who would likely then sit behind incumbent Daniel Jones, of whom Schoen said the expectation is for the former Duke signal caller to start once he's recovered from a torn ACL.

The problem with Brooks' suggestion, besides the apparent fact that he seems grossly unaware of the other issues that doomed the Giants, such as the offensive line and the failure of anyone receiving target to step up and seize the bull by the horns, also includes a cost.

If Wilson believes he's still a starter, his cost probably won't be cheap for a Giants team that needs to allocate resources to other spots, making him a luxury the Giants likely won't be able to afford.

This isn't to say the Giants won't add a veteran--Schoen has said that's very much under consideration. But the Giants are more likely to get a guy who is fine with being a backup until his number is called, which could be as soon as opening day if Jones doesn't get the green light to return from his ACL injury.

The Giants are expected to upgrade their offensive line talent, a big problem for the quarterbacks last season, and add a No. 1 receiver to their mix. They are also working toward getting running back Saquon Barkley under contract, though that scenario still needs to play out.

There is also the matter of Wilson still being under contract to Denver, whose head coach, Sean Payton, said a decision regarding Wilson's future with the team would be coming before the start of free agency.

The bottom line is the Giants are not one quarterback away. And Schoen indicated to reporters at the combine that the goal should be to continue building up the team on the whole rather than sinking a large chunk of money into a 35-year-old quarterback who, at best, would be a stop-gap solution.
