NFL executive: 'I wouldn't want to be in AFC West' if Chiefs draft Alabama RB

Even though the Kansas City Chiefs offense led the NFL in scoring last season (496 points), drafting Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs could propel it further.

A league executive told Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer,"I wouldn't want to be in the AFC West if Gibbs winds up in Kansas City," during the NFL Draft on April 27-29.

Breer reports the 21-year-old RB is on Kansas City's draft board. The Chiefs targeting an RB is surprising since Isiah Pacheco, 24, looked like the feature back after rushing for the second-most yards in the postseason (197) behind San Francisco's Christian McCaffrey.

Yet Gibbs is the No. 2 RB prospect in the 2023 class, per NFL.com, and his value keeps increasing. Many teams salivate over his versatile skill set.

"I've heard his name a lot this week," wrote ESPN draft expert Todd McShay. "And with a down wide receiver class, teams might be thinking about drafting Gibbs and giving him snaps out of the slot. Bottom line: I'd be surprised if, at this point, he doesn't go Round 1."

Chiefs HC Andy Reid used former RB Jerrick McKinnon in the passing game frequently last season, targeting him 71 times, fourth-most on the team. Gibbs fits his scheme since he's an adept pass-catcher.

Per Pro Football Focus, he caught 25 receptions of 15-plus yards over the past three seasons, the most among RBs. Pacheco and Gibbs could create a dynamic tandem, so the Chiefs should consider using their first-rounder (No. 31 overall) on the RB.

The Chiefs have won two Super Bowls in four seasons. Adding one more playmaker to a unit that includes quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce continues the reign of a budding dynasty.
