Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was the subject of trade rumors long before the Dolphins fell to 0-3 on the season ahead of their "Monday Night Football" home game versus the 0-3 New York Jets.
For a piece produced by Jeff Howe of The Athletic that was published on Monday, one unnamed NFL executive suggested the Dolphins made a mistake by not trading Hill in 2024.
"Tyreek’s value for a trade was last year," that executive said. "The money, off-field accusations and instability would scare me off. He is talented, but that is a huge gamble for any type of valuable pick. You need to do a lot of homework before you make that decision."
Specifically, that executive was referencing domestic violence allegations made by Hill's estranged wife earlier in September. Hill has denied any wrongdoing regarding those accusations and has not been criminally charged.
Also in September, a report about supposed culture issues that have impacted the Dolphins under head coach Mike McDaniel mentioned that Hill was "among repeat offenders who received numerous fines throughout" the 2024 campaign for being "late to practice and meetings."
Back in January of this year, Hill told reporters that he was "out" after he subbed himself out of Miami's 2024 regular-season finale. He later apologized for those actions. Over Miami's first three games of the ongoing season, Hill recorded 15 receptions for 198 yards and one touchdown.
Of the 13 team executives and coaches Howe spoke to about Hill's value, six believed Miami could potentially get a third-round draft pick in return for the 31-year-old's services. Others thought Hill may only be worth a fourth- or fifth-rounder, but one said the Dolphins "could stretch the compensation to a second-rounder" if the right buyer emerged.
The Kansas City Chiefs and the Pittsburgh Steelers have repeatedly been linked with Hill in September. That said, the Dolphins understandably may not be ready to punt on the 2025 campaign before September comes to an end. After Miami hosts the winless Jets, the Dolphins will play at a 1-3 Carolina Panthers side that is coming off a blowout loss to the New England Patriots. In short, Miami earning back-to-back wins could silence talk about the club possibly trading Hill for at least a couple of weeks.
