The 2024 NFL season is in the books and, for Kansas City Chiefs fans, the season will be looked at as a disappointment. The Chiefs, on the brink of history, were unable to win their third straight Super Bowl title and now they enter an offseason marred with difficult decisions ahead of them.
While appearing on Up & Adams on Tuesday, ESPN's Benjamin Solak was asked what the Chiefs needed to do this offseason to stay at the top of the pack. He didn't seem too concerned about the offense and noted that the only place for that unit to go is up.
"The offense is going to be better because it's hard to imagine it being any worse with [Patrick Mahomes] at the helm," Solak said.
Solak then goes into how the offseason might look overall, pointing out that the Chiefs will likely lose some key contributors, such as Nick Bolton, Marquise Brown, Justin Reid, and Trey Smith.
"You're probably hoping to let some big contracts leave," Solak said when it came to the offseason plans, noting that Brett Veach has been good at drafting in the middle rounds but not so much in the first. "You're probably just hoping to get younger, get a little bit faster at the wide receiver positions... Spags just plugs the holes in for you on defense and you run this thing back."
Kay Adams joked, "Just like that?" but it's true for this team. They have the best player in the league at quarterback and while it obviously matters to make sure other positions aren't total weaknesses, they don't have to have a perfect roster to compete for and win Super Bowls. It's a great spot to be in for sure.
The Chiefs appear to have hit on Xavier Worthy and if Rashee Rice comes back healthy, those are two excellent targets for Mahomes at wide receiver. Adding another speedster at the position can only make this offense better and after two down years for what used to be the strength of the Chiefs, it feels like the pendulum has to swing back in the other direction soon but hopefully that's not at the cost of the defense.
