There's not much panic among fans regarding Terry McLaurin's contract holdout. But one NFL analyst urged the Washington Commanders to do right by the wide receiver and get this matter resolved urgently.
McLaurin wants a new deal that hasn't arrived yet. He opted to skip voluntary OTAs and mandatory minicamp. Reports also suggest the gifted pass-catcher is frustrated about the lack of progress being made in negotiations to raise worries.
The Commanders know how vital McLaurin is to their plans. Extending one of the league's most consistent playmakers won't be cheap, but few would argue that he's not deserving of another massive financial commitment after everything he's given to the organization.
John Breech from CBS Sports thought the Commanders would be playing with fire by letting this situation go on for much longer. The analyst acknowledged the changing receiver market could get McLaurin around $30 million per season. And he urged those in power to bring a successful end to this saga in the weeks leading up to training camp.
Terry McLaurin is holding out over a contract dispute, as he's entering the final year of his deal. … The Commanders don't seem too concerned about it, but the market has certainly changed since McLaurin's last extension. Is McLaurin worth $30 million a year after coming off a career-high 13 touchdowns? The Commanders would be foolish to let this holdout drag on. Good chance this holdout ends sooner rather than later.John Breech
This is what Commanders fans have been screaming for months. They want one of their franchise players to be happy with long-term security. And after everything McLaurin's done for Washington's football franchise, it's the least he deserves.
Adam Peters is a smart guy. He wants to tie down McLaurin and secure his status with the team. Big-money contracts like this are complicated to work out, but the overall objectives haven't changed.
McLaurin is a dynamic weapon. He's a proven performer in the biggest moments. His leadership in the locker room is unquestioned. He's fiercely loyal and willing to do whatever it takes to help the squad. The Ohio State product is the definition of a franchise cornerstone.
Peters knows that. McLaurin's representatives do too, which is probably why they are holding out for the money he's no doubt worth. The Commanders will pay him eventually, it's just a matter of when.
After that, McLaurin will be back on the field, ready to prepare for Washington's upcoming challenges. And the sooner something gets rubber-stamped, the better.
