Dak Prescott led the charge for the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday as they secured a 30-23 win against the Washington Commanders on Christmas Day. It was a much-needed victory for the Cowboys, who came into the game after losing three in a row and officially getting eliminated from playoff contention.
Prescott logged 19-of-37 completed passes for 307 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions, while also adding 24 rushing yards on four carries. The four-time Pro Bowl quarterback was also sacked six times by the Commanders, but he did just enough to carry his team to a win on Christmas Day.
Prescott was involved in a contentious incident in the third quarter. The Cowboys quarterback was sacked by Commanders linebacker Von Miller at the 5:58 mark of the quarter at third-and-9. It was a crucial moment in the game, with Miller’s sack potentially ending Dallas’ drive.
The Commanders, however, were hit with a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness, which gave the Cowboys an automatic first down. This was after Washington LB Frankie Luvu went in to tackle Prescott after the latter had already been sacked.
It seemed like Luvu did not realize that the play had already ended as he hit Prescott, who was spiking the ball in frustration. Either way, Luvu was assessed a personal foul, and the Cowboys kept possession. Dallas eventually ended the drive with a 52-yard field goal from Brandon Aubrey, which increased its lead to 27-17.

The bad news for Luvu and the Commanders is that he could be facing an NFL fine for his actions here. The league will review this unnecessary roughness violation and decide whether to impose further punishment.
For context, Luvu has already been fined three times this season, amounting to $166,568. All three infractions were for hip-drop tackles. In Week 15, the NFL fined 18 players for unnecessary roughness, with the most substantial penalty on Kevin Winston of the Tennessee Titans ($23,186).
Luvu, who has already amassed $245,242 in total fines in his eight-year career, could be facing another hefty penalty from the NFL after Thursday’s incident with Prescott.
The Commanders will be back in action on Week 18 to face the Philadelphia Eagles, while Prescott and the Cowboys will close out their campaign with a matchup against the New York Giants.
