It's amazing just how many bets you can make in the NFL futures market, and we've been running through everything we can find. One such market caught our eye, looking at the odds on total points scored for the year. You can back both a team you think leads the league in scoring and who comes in last.
Naturally it's more fun to find us a team that could expect some fireworks, so we'll touch on that first before looking at the flip side later this week.
Odds courtesy of DraftKings.
Last year, it was the Dallas Cowboys who topped the NFL in points scored with 30.1 points per game. The rest of the top five, all averaging 27+ points per game, were San Francisco, Miami, Baltimore and Detroit.
As one might imagine, each of the top nine teams for points per game made the postseason, so it should come as little surprise to see the favorites in this market all teams that sit near the top of the Super Bowl odds board for this season.
Miami seems worth a wager here after coming in third this past season in points (27.9 per game) and 11th the year prior.
This offense had spurts of getting into track meets, as one might imagine they would with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle at WR and Raheem Mostert and De'Von Achane at running back.
The Dolphins proved they can beat you with explosive plays on the ground and through the air, and their speedy skill-position players are all back in the fold, plus they added Odell Beckham Jr. and rookie RB Jaylen Wright.
This offense is loaded and at 10-1, we'll gladly back them to pour on the points again.
The appeal of the Detroit Lions in this market is quite simple. Obviously, it's great to see that were fifth each of the past two years in points per game, but it's also nice to see just how many plays their offense was able to run.
Points is always going to be a volume play, and the Lions ranked third in total offensive plays per game last season. Jared Goff is signed to an extension and has a loaded group of weapons to keep moving the football.
Amon-Ra St. Brown, Sam LaPorta, Jameson Williams, David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, plus one of the league's best offensive lines, makes for one hard-to-stop unit. We're expecting the Lions to continue finding success together with Ben Johnson returning to be OC for another season.
