NFL, general managers in dispute of when 2020 draft should happen

While the 2020 NFL Draft in Las Vegas reportedly is off due to the coronavirus outbreak, the league still wants to have the draft go on as scheduled from April 23-25, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter and Dianna Russini.

The draft wouldn't be nearly as authentic as years past with a proposed online format in which players and teams would likely video chat when selections are made.

However, that's not the largest concern among NFL general managers. They're more worried about not having enough time for player physicals, gathering psychological testing, getting further verified information about players and some teams having to conduct the draft from home, according to Schefter and Russini.

While the NFL still has time to make a decision, the thinking among owners and the league office is for the draft to go on as scheduled.

One general manager voiced his opinion on "The Peter King Podcast," and he'd like to push the draft back for obvious reasons.

"I'd be personally in favor of delaying the draft, so that we can get some of the work done that our scouts and our personnel people ordinarily do," New Orleans Saints GM Mickey Loomis said. "And then just the logistics of trying to conduct the draft, with not having access to your draft rooms and your offices, creates a lot of logistic problems.

"This is not a fantasy draft that you conduct out there with just a list of things on a piece of paper. There's a lot of work that goes into it to prepare, and there's a lot of work that is done during the draft. Listen, it'll be very, very difficult to conduct that and do it in a way that you're doing justice to the process."

If the draft doesn't get pushed back, we'll likely see some teams get rather frustrated with the league office.
